I'm looking for a rod to throw dawgs and cowgirls.Should i go with a 7'6 H or 8'H rod? Which one would be the better rod and why? Thx for the help

9' H or XH. Bigger figure-eights, longer casts, better hook-up percentages.

I don't want to go with a 9' because sometime i fish from shore and go wading and it's a hassle.

Posts: 538 Location: northern indiana | rod choice: tackle industries, oldschool tackle rods, gloomis, St. Croix, toothtamer, Okuma, gaffight customes, maybe try to be more presise with your question. Lots of people here are more than willing to help.

Posts: 992 | fishing from shore a longer rod would be even better...go H or XH, dont go below 8', and possibly check out a telescopic model (like TI or okuma) both very solid rods. The XH will give you the choice to go to the mag dawg if you decide to whereas the H will limit you to the 2-6 or 2-8 oz range...sure you could throw bigger than 6 or 8 oz lures ok with a H rod (who knows for how long though) but why not just go with the XH. They pull big blades a lot beter too

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | IMO you will want a rod longer than 8' fishing those lures from shore. Go with a 9' rod and you will be much happier. For rods, if you want one under $150 there are my TI rods, Okuma and I have heard good things about Tooth Tammer rods too but I only have used my XH TI rods and I also own an Okuma which I like. It is the 9'3" XH. If your budget allows buy a custom rod and for the same price as a St Croix you can have a really cool rod built on a St Croix blank but to your specifications. I no longer use any rods under 8' and mostly 9' for everything...

Posts: 1023 | when I started muskie fishing I resisted the long XH rod fad. Well guess what - it's not a fad. Buy a 8'6" or longer XH and avoid the hassle of selling shorter/softer rods later like I did:) I am 5'8" and I can easily handle the bigger sticks so don't worry about that. Take the advice given, even if you have your mind half-set on something lighter - trust these guys. They've been there and done that. Happy fishing

I'm only 5'3" so not sure about the 9' rod,i'll check out some 8' to 8'6" rods. Does a longer rod give you better hooksets?

Posts: 992 | much better, it shortens the distance between you and the bait, more leverage, harder snaps. If you dont want to do 9' TI rods go with 8'6 okuma EVX telescopic (although the 6' difference isnt much) or musky innovations has their new split grip line I think those are all 8'3 and run in a M, MH, H, and XH. Check em all out if you can!

Posts: 258 Location: Mayville, WI | I fish from shore here and there too and a 8'6" or 9' is not cumbersome, get the longer rods - you'll never go back. sc
