Ok now you're looking - Who's your favorite hooker?[]

The subject is really hooks.

What's your best hooking lure(hooker), i.e., ratio of strikes to hook- ups?

Who makes the best treble hook out there?

Are smaller hooks better than big hooks?

What size do you use on specific lure sizes/types?

Do you use different sizes on a lure?

Are you fishing barbless?

Do you sharpen them to finger nail stickey?

I fish barbless because I've been stuck a couple of times, one trip to the ER and the last time I pulled it myself. Neither was a pleasant experience. But I also think barbless hooks penetrate better.

So give up your secrets about hooks & their importance in getting that Muskie attached to your line.[8)] [:0] [] [:sun:]

Al, I like VMC round bends and the short shank mustad round bend hooks. Alot of takle makers use them.

The key to a good hook up is the gap between the shaft and the point, the angle of the point related to the shaft, the sharpness of the hook, and where the hook hits when the angler aplies the hookset.

There is no better hooking lure than a jig, in my opinion. I lose fish on those too, though. If I can drag the jig across my palm with the point and hook eye against the skin, the gap is wrong and more fish will be missed.

I sharpen the hooks to a hypo using the two side by side files in a wood handle.

Thin wire hooks will penetrate easier but will also flex more, resulting in bent hooks and lost fish. I don't think one HAS to have 2X or 3X hooks, but strong, in my opinion, is better.

I haven't tried barbless. I am going to though ( my experience with Mark on Cass had me thinking about the advantages, which are many); next season on Pike while in Canada. I catch a number every trip up to the low 40" class, so that would be a good lab to see how it goes.

By the way , Al. I must be getting old. I never even sorta thought about your intended reference to hookers at all until I read your post...[:blackeye:]

Aggree with ToddM on the hooks. Tried a few barbless (pinched the barb down) have not noticed a difference. On baits that dart around a lot I have had a problem with hook ups, 2 things I tried helped. 1 saw a letter in infisherman a few years back (I think from indiana) they put 2 split rings on the belly hook and dropped it down. 2 some walleye guys that had some problems with fish getting off while trolling started using hooks with the barb end twisted sideways a little, so the hook has to kind of screw out. So I tried those 2 things and seems to have stopped the problem with the fish getting off after hitting so far.
