The Milwaukee Muskie Expo, in cooperation with Outdoors First Media, has announced the addition of the first annual Hand Crafted Musky Lure Building World Championship to the 2012 show. The show will be held at Wisconsin's State Fair Park February 10-11-12.

The competition will highlight hand-built, hand painted original lures made by talented lure artisans from all over the muskie’s range, and even possibly...the world.

“There has been growing interest regarding custom lures in angling circles as well as Internet forums, especially the unbelievable paint jobs which are worthy of being placed in art studios,” said show promoter Doug Reuter.

Reuter said the idea for the competition originated from viewing various forums and posts on the Internet added by lure crafters showing off their creations. “Duck hunting has decoy carving contests, woodcarving has countless carving contests, so why not promote the increased interest in the sport of muskie fishing by having a custom lure competition,” Reuter said. “These lures are created by the most talented craftsmen in the world, and not only do they have to craft a lure with enticing action they have to paint them to attract a muskie, but appeal to the discriminating eye of today’s muskie fisherman.”

The lures will be displayed at the Outdoors First Media Booth at the show where visitors can see the lures up close and vote for their favorite one. The competition will consist of three categories including: topwater, crankbait, and glider/jerkbait. The competition will also consist of three divisions within each category including manufacturers, professional/basement, and amateur, for a total of nine winners.

Patrons entering the show will be given a judging form in which they can vote for their favorite lure. After the results of the competition have been tallied, the winners will be announced and the one-of-a-kind lures will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. All proceeds from the entries and auction will be donated to a charity that will benefit musky fishing TBA by OFM in the near future.

Entrants interested in being part of the competition can obtain an entry form from the Milwaukee Expo website: http://www.muskieexpo.com/pages/new-world-championship-handcrafted-...

Please define “hand crafted”?  Does the creativity that starts in my head, goes through  my hands, to my keyboard and mouse, cut on a CNC machine, and then hand painted qualify?  Do the many hours of hand dremeled prototypes, many CAD revisions, more CNC prototyping, and then finally a mold and plastic baits made qualify for such a contest?

Cool thanks!  I guess I’d be in the manufactures division then?  In the spirit of competition I’d paint my own entry even though my production painter Stan Durst is way more of an artist that I am.  Are there any rules in regards to that?  Could I enter a bait with someone else’s paint job?  Could someone else enter a bait painted on one of my blanks?  - Thanks again
