Location: Contrarian Island | I prefer a blend...fiberglass/graphite...buddy recommended the Musky Inn. 9 foot trolling / live bait rods a few yrs ago and I've switched all my fleet of 4 to this rod...sweet rod for sucker hooksets and I'm not worried they are gonna break...boated fish to 40 + lbs on em.... lots of backbone and love the length for fighting the fish... |

| I use whatever spare rod/reel I have in the boat. So, yes, the same rods that would be used for casting. I have only been at this for 4 years so I don't have 16 different combos with specific ones designated for sucker fishing. |

Location: Hopefully on the water | Not that I do it a lot but when I get time to go out and use Suckers. I do have a different rod and the boys know which one it is. I use a 9'6" Gander mountain dipsy rod 2 piece with a diawa accu depth line counter reel. It is affordable under a $100 when I bought it and fun to fight fish on. I personally have terrible luck on Suckers (in general) but we did put a 44" on this rod a couple of weeks ago. |

Location: Forest Lake, MN & Bemidji, MN | If you are fishing in the cold a fiberglass rod or a blend as mentioned is less likely to snap on a hookset than a graphite rod. Graphite is more brittle I think. I would guess that's the main motivation for most folks using a specific rod type for sucker fishing. |

| hey Mark...I agree with others here in preferring a glass/graphite mix that will be more durable for giving 'em the berries when it's cold outside. I prefer the Black River "Live/Troll"...plenty of backbone on hooksets, a tip you can "read" when trolling, and a forgiving action for fighting fish. best of all they're very affordable. www.blackriverrods.com |
