| I just oiled a reel, basically everything.....oiled the bearings, spool, blah blah blah....
Grease on the gears, etc...
Now I am encountering resistance when reeling, and also I've noticed that my spool is slowing down at a much faster rate on the cast - I can't cast nearly as far as I used to be able to.
My thinking is that it's something with the oil in the bearings. Anyone have an idea as to what the problem could be? |

| I'm certainly not a reel guru, but I have had this problem. In my case, it was a failure to make sure the centrifugal weights were pushed in (not locked in, just pushed in until they stop) on the tabs when I put the side plate back on. This caused two things to happen:
1. I actually crushed the weights (the little plastic oval things) enough where they would no longer slide back and forth freely on the tabs.
2. I also bent the tabs down a bit, so instead of the flat surface of the weights making contact when you cast, the outside edge was rubbing all of the time. The reel still worked, but I was unable to get any distance out of it casting. I could feel resistance on the spool when I pulled line out in freespool, and even when I would reel. I had the reel apart twice after that trying to figure out what the problem was, and finally I remembered that the first time I had a heck of a time getting the side plate back on all of the way, like it wouldn't line up right, and finally had to force it. That should have been my first clue. The second time I noticed that the weights had been flattened and the tabs that they go on were bent down towards the spool. If that's what happened, worst case is you need to replace the weights and the part with the tabs that the weights go on to. (don't know what the part is called) What I wound up having to do was take the weights off, bend the tabs back straight instead of flattened down, and put the weights back on upside down. (the go on either way, but one side was now distorted. I probably should have just replaced them, but the reel is working fine now)
It sounds like that may be your problem. If so, I think it's probably easier to just replace the parts. If it's an Abu, you're probably taking about $5 total, if even that much. You probably have extra weights laying around, most reels come with extras. If you have another reel you can take apart for reference, pull the sideplate off and take a look at the tabs and the weights on the one that works. I'd be willing to bet yours on the bad reel are messed up.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | If U over oiled and greased the reel that will happen. Only 1 drop of oil per bearing and a very light coat of grease on the gears and levelwind, a very light coat. On the A/R Bearing I use 2 drops of oil, do not grease that bearing. Also I hope U cleaned the bearing first before reoiling. |

| I did use Abu Garcia oil, but it's not cold here. In fact it's been a steady 70 degrees or so for the last few days.
Pikemaster, I did clean the bearings first....I may have just over oiled. Ugh looks like I have to take the #*^@ thing apart again.
Esoxaddict, this is a bass reel, and it does not use centrifugal brakes, only magnets. I appreciate the input though |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I would bet the oil is a heavy oil. Flush the bearings out with acetone and re-oil with Quantum Hot Sauce. That should help. |

| You oiled the spool? What part of the spool did you oil? If you have to much oil you can get oil between the spool and the frame and that can cause the spool to really slow down. Are you sure the magnets are back in the right place? If the magnets are sticking out to far it will really slow the spool down. |

| I'll try flushing the bearings this weekend, and I'll use a light oil on them.
Oil may have gotten between the spool and frame, I'll have to check that as well as the magnets. Thanks for the help guys! |
