my longest is 7 06 right now that i can throw mag dawgs and the double 10s with. it's an XH premier. I don't care to throw pounders. Is an 08 06 worth it? What more can i throw with it? again, i don't throw pounders but will throw a mag dawg. would like a more versitale rod and maybe bring one less in the boat. how will an 08 06 throw say a suick, smaller glide baits, etc. any recommendations? thanks.

Posts: 304 Location: Lino Lakes, MN | speaking for myself only. In the last 3 years 1/3 of my fish have come on a figure 8. A big part of turning the followers into eater is my 9'3" Okuma XH (very heavy to use all day) but worth it when that one chance comes around. In the past I never had such a high percentage of fish on the 8's. The shortest rod I typicly use now is my 8' 0" All Star XH for twitching minnowbaits and working topwaters( weagle ect) - However if fishing by myself I almost always use the long rod teamed up with a Saltist 20 or 30 and pull blades double 10's mainly- I have a lot of confidence with that setup (speed, power, big figure 8). I like to have someone in the boat throwing that bait at all times durring the main part of the season. Now that fall is upon us I don't have as much confidence in that bait but will throw dawgs, medusa's ect on the long rod for when that following fish approaches the boat. I fish out of a Lund Mr Pike and the deck seems fairly high above the water. Good Luck Steve

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Sorgy, One note on the 9'3 XH Okuma. They are coming out with new versions of their line up which are 20% lighter. It's like night and day from the old rods. I've been throwing the 9;3 XH a TON as of late with a bunch of nice fish on it, and I'm loving it. For the money, it'll throw any mid to high range (so anything from ripping DDDs and rubber to double 10s and 13s) and can throw it all day long. I've been throwing the 9'3 H for smaller tails, some topwater (Traiders), and depth raiders and likewise that has been a very good stick for me.

i do like the telescopic feature. how short does it break down to? any issues with that? is it obnoxiously long in a small boat? looks like the heavy 09 03 would be good for me going no bigger than mag dawgs. is that noticeably lighter than the XH?

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | I have the tournament version 86XHF and can throw anything with that rod besides smaller bucktails and smaller cranks. It throws any size jerkbaits, any size rubber and big bucktails very well.

I believe the 9'3" Okumas break down to 6'10"; 9' Tackle Industries break down to 7'6". Both are great rods. I wish the TIs had something in between their MH and XH models. I think the XH would be best for what you want. http://www.okumafishingteam.com/family/299655/EVx_Musky http://www.tackleindustries.com/muskypikerods.html Joel, when will the new Okumas be out?

Posts: 304 Location: Lino Lakes, MN | Yes I have my eye on the new TI rods and the new Okuma when it comes out. I was making the point that the longer rod definitly up's your chances to put fish in the boat. I have some 7' -7'6" rods for sale if anyone wants them ![]() Good Luck Steve

Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Have yet to find a bait my 9' XH Tackle Industries rods won't throw. I use one for almost every bait I use. I do carry a 8'2 loomis for snapping some gliders still though, more due to the fact of I had it more than anything but if I need to loose a rod in the boat the Loomis is the first to go....

Dude, I fish my 9' MH TI out of a 12' flatbottom boat! (my main water is a shallow river) No issues for me. The good news is a 16' flatbottom is on the way! jeremy

Posts: 304 Location: Lino Lakes, MN | I think one is a 7'2" G-Loomis in like new condition. Action is H. Another is a 7'6" St. Croix - premier in ok condition. It does not get used much anymore. I also have a 7' St Croix H - premier good ok codition. I also have an old Abu rod 6'6" good conditon a 6' Thorne Bros fiberglass jerkbait rod. Good condition. If you are in the Metro I can bring them home from up North where they could be looked at. Prices would be negotiable after viewing. Of all the rods the ones I used the most wer the St Croix and the Abu. I will not ship them. Good Luck Steve

think i'm sold on the Okuma H 08 06 as i like that it can throw 2-8 ounces as opposed to TI's 1-6 rating on the MH. I would prefer a ligher rod than the XH okuma or TI. am i safe throwing mag dawgs (heaviest i'll throw) on the Okuma 8 06 H seeing its rated up to 8 ounces where i think a mag dawg weighs in at? or close.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | RE: "I would prefer a ligher rod than the XH okuma or TI." Just an FYI but my musky/pike rods are about the lightest rods you will find on the market today. Just curious if you are seeing my specifications on my rods correctly. The below are some of my rod specs for my solid 9' rods with full grip 18" handles.... Just making sure you had the correct info on my rods. For lure ratings, my MH can throw an 8oz lure just fine. However, it is rated 1-6oz as those are teh lure weigths taht load up perfectly with the rod. I can throw a 2lb lure with my MH rods. Granted, the lure will about touch the back of your head if you do this. Thanks, James 9' Solid Blank Musky Rod Specifications: MH Power Rods: Retail $139.95 - Lure weight rated: 1-6oz - Rod weight 9.7oz "Mag Heavy" XH Power Rods: Retail $145.95 - Lure weight rated: 3-12oz - Rod weight 10.1oz "Mega Heavy" XXH Power Rods: Retail $149.95 - Lure weight rated: 8-36oz - Rod weight 12.6oz http://www.tackleindustries.com/muskypikerods.html
