Anybody know if or when the dnr pulls the buoys out of the water in vermilion? Going up end of october and wondering if hazards will still be marked.

I can't say for Vermilion specifically. But in general, I would expect them to be gone.
Not sure when they pulled them but I was out on Pelican (WI) last friday and they were gone. I even got to watch someone run their boat up on the rocks around Antigo island. It was funny (and thier boat was okay). I don't know of any lakes that leave them in that long.

Yes, they are pulled. I was up there the 3rd week in October last year and they were all pulled. Headed up over Halloween this year, I would expect them to be pulled. Thank god my buddy has a place up there and knows it like the back of his hand.

You should be OK if you have a GPS with a map on it. I have a Lawrance H20 with a Lakemaster chip and it shows all the hazards and even where the markers would be. I have navigated through some serious rocks before just using the buoys on the GPS screen. The only problem would be if the GPS unit couldn't get a good fix on the satellites. In that case, make sure you have a spare prop with....

Just don't outrun your map chip and/or get cocky and you should be fine.

Jas D is right on,....... BUT,.... the water is about 2ft low on the Lake right now,.... sooooo,... It's a bit harder to navagate around some areas that arn't marked......and..... your GPS may lead you on some rocks from time to time (don't trust it all of the time)

I think it's Oct 24 or when the water temp hits 39 degrees. Which ever comes first.
Vermilion is the lowest any of us old timers can remember. There was no water coming over the Pike River Dam at all yesterday. First time I've seen that. Your down a good two feet plus from what most GPS chips say. Be careful out there.

I have a place up there and like Silver Scale said have never seen it this low in many years. Many more rocks in play right now. If you plan to fish at night and rely soley on GPS for nav i.e., you're not real familiar with the waters, then I hope you have made your peace with the big guy before venturing outor plan to drive real slow.

The 24th is correct, a lot of the resort owners complained the last couple of years that the buoys were being pulled before MEA weekend ( it is the 20th and 21st this year) the last chance for school kids and families to enjoy a long weekend before ice up.
And yes the lake is VERY low so heed all the above warnings

I don't think it's turned yet if that helps. Since I'm going up next weekend I'm sure it'll turn then...

If you run Lowrance units make sure you turn on "Position Error" as one of your overlay data options. You would be surprised to see how much satellite movement changes your actual position on the GPS map throughout the day and from day to day. This is why there are times you find yourself a long way from a trail or an icon one day and right on it the next. I believe the day the guys that smacked that little island the PE was over 300ft off! Now if I could only get position error on my new birds!
