Hey guys - What if you had a choice:

1) Keep what you have, your boat, lures, rods and reels, all your gear.
or
2) Give up everything and get the same amount of cash you paid for all your stuff to start over. So if you paid $30k for your boat you get $30k. Nothing depreciated. You don't get to keep that favorite lure or reel, not your boat or your custom tackle box, nothing at all.

What would you do?

I'd take the money and get all new stuff. I've wasted a lot on useless stuff that I could cash in on better stuff.

I'd keep what I have...

You would not be able to get into a boat of the same size or horsepower... It would be a downgrade from what I have now...

Ate the deductible and used the resulting money to buy everything I liked, nothing that I didn't, and a whole bunch of new stuff I wanted. (Hint - hiding the receipts from the future evil x-wife served out to save me thousands.)

Choice #1 is for fools that have never had a financial concern in their life time, and/or are too stupid to see one coming! Trust me!!!! I'm the stupid foolish King of financial sea anchors of DOOM. By the way...is anyone interested in a 1959 26' Chris Craft Sea Skiff??? I will throw in the rods, reels, downeast rod holders and more Swim Whizz style lures you could imagine. You could be the next Home LeBlanc! Contact me if interested in buying or on how to tie a hang man's knot.

I don't even know where my fishing gear is, but if I did, I'd take the cash and spend it on liquor and good quality hats.

Choice #2 in a heartbeat. Starting out buying stuff when I was young and didn't really know that much, there were many items I bought that were poor choices. A chance to get back retail prices on 6' St. Croix rods, and then buy 2 9'3" okumas with basically the same money...? Not to mention all the baits I bought without knowing much about them, and never put fish in the boat with. My boat is worth a fraction of what I paid for it new. I'd buy a used glass boat in it's place fairly quickly if someone gave me the refund. I don't need or use half the tackle I've bought over the years, better choices on lures for sure.

I'm pretty happy with my gear, but I would trade out my boat for sure. My situation has changed a bit since I bout the original boat and could use an upgrade to a bigger rig.

Id would for sure have to keep my boat... Well, since I have more than one, I guess I am lying a little. I would get rid of my boat I currently have no use for.

Since most of my lures that I use heavily are in critical need for care or replacing, I would gladly like to rash up a few new lures. I am one of those guys that stick to my dependable 5 or 6. Although I have a hundred of so lures, there are few that get washed frequently. The rest just make my gear bags and bins heavy.

Like most fools, I bought lures that I don't think I'll ever throw much--a Night shiner Burt, a crackle finnish Stalker. But all in all, I'm pretty satisfied, and have learned. I haven't had the chance to fish all season (hey, life is tough), but I'd still keep what I have; and not spend more.

I'm a real bargain hunter. We got a hell of a deal on the boat and I got a lot of really great deals on a lot of the gear that I have (show specials, swap meets, craigslist, etc). I'd have to keep what I have because if I cashed it all in for what I paid for it, I'd be getting much less than market value and probably wouldn't be able to buy 1/2 of it back.

i'm keepin' my stuff ... never got overboard. if i can't catch one with depth raiders, ddd's, weagles, double 10's, pacemakers or grandmas out of a paid for '94 ranger being pulled by a paid for f250 turbo-diesel then i don't deserve to fish in the first place.

i do ok out in the real world and am amazed and the amount of money people will put toward a hobby there isn't enough time to do anyway. at least if you're working in this economy ...

the last round of the economic downturn left a lasting mark on me. less is more ...

Very limited musky water around me and I still haven't sold anything. Enjoy my yearly trips to Canada and money isn't everything.

I'm slowly moving toward this thinking as well.

I definitely went overboard when I started this, but am slowly getting to a core of gear that is minimized

Most of us cannot learn from history or from others, we need to stick OUR OWN finger in the fan to really learn it. The guy I learned to fish Muskies from had 3-6 baits to his name. I have that in some color patterns!! There are those "special" baits they just get bites. Those never leave. Others the question is "what is the difference between a bait and a good bait?" Most of the time it's not the bait as much as the time it gets to be wet. I often paid too much for things, but I got what I wanted, I sell and trade all the time and of course buy too. I would keep my stuff. I enjoy it. I can never say that about any amount of money I've ever piled up.

I guess part of my question is: Would I retain all knowledge if I were starting all over?

I do have to admit, although I would likely sell a lot of the lures I currently posses, I would not trade the knowledge they have gained me for anything.

Hmmm. All new stuff that might work or the old stuff that does work. Put me down as one who would keep everything they have. While it would be nice to have a new boat and new stuff, my best lures, rods and reels are no longer available. So, I'd rather stick with the old stuff that I know will put fish in the net rather than get a bunch of new stuff that might.

How about if I keep all my old stuff and add some new stuff? For instance, I am really liking those Show Girls. They cast like bullets, are easy to reel in, and catch big fish - kind of like spinner baits. Of course, they aren't so weedless. But one doesn't always need weedless.

What I think most of us really need is more time. How about we just use old stuff and have more time? I'd settle with that any day......

Too much work to figure out where all my old stuff is. I get a new boat every year anyway, but would be happy to stick with my X170T into the future.

Well...I dont know.Almost everything I own is paid for and is worth more than I give for it,thats the way things roll for me...wait for the oppurtunity for a great deal, get things at cost or discounts and build from that..My house is worth twice than what I have in it,took a few years to do that, but so worth it.I dont buy new vehicles off the floor(total waste of $$),I build houses without a contractor,(plus work fulltime)do some work myself, and buy boats/motors at employee discount since Im fortunate to have family in the boating industry...So I guess I will keep what I have until Im ready to upgrade...
