I am registered but the guest post was kinda the point of the comment. Point being that it doesn't bother me that people just want to stay guests sometimes.

What's the rationale behind the policy Steve ?

1) Registration requires only a name and an email. Easy to get a gmail or hotmail account under an assumed name.
2) We don't need to have you register to know who you are based upon your IP Address. For example, your real name is listed as 'Dan'. I know lots of Dans, but I am not sure if I know you.
3) We have offered this format for over a decade, and are still growing..fast. Simply put, it's a successful model.
4) The posting permissions we offer are fairly strict when compared even to boards that require registration, and have been pretty much the same for 11 years. It doesn't matter what board name is offered, including 'guest'. All we ask is everyone at least tries to behave, and for the most part, everyone does. There's a TON of good advice, and very useful content added by our unregistered guests. It's only when people go off the grid and start train wrecks anyone get's all cranked up, and that's handled per our posting permissions.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve. I think it's important to understand the rationale when the annoying few turn threads into a train wrecks. All to often I have thought "there's no way this person makes a post like that if the general community knows who they are".

While I respect your policy, I still believe it's a sad day when people won't "man up" to make a controversial statement and put their name behind it.

That makes sense and the folks monitoring the board do a very good job of keeping things civil. That is much more important than a consistent moniker/name.
lots of luck

With out guests, these forums would be Vanilla, j/k.
I find some of the guests posts the most entertaining of all, not so much the attack ones though.

5. it's easier to remain logged in and post, rather than have to decipher and type that stupid code as a guest

I've been posting here for years under an alias. I even attended an outing under an assumed name. It's a matter of national security.

I've questioned this numerous times and OutdoorsFIRST Media is going to continue standing by their no-registration policy. I definitely respect that, however, in today's day and age of the brilliant Internet... there are numerous pieces of software readily available that will allow a computer to hide its IP address.

If I wanted to log in with a new GUEST moniker each and everytime and start mouthing off like most of these tough internet gangsters do... and THEN scramble my IP address with each individual log in, I'd welcome any of computer saavy individuals at OutdoorsFIRST to try & decipher who I am.

My point being that if you have to login as a GUEST just to say something sarcastic, witty or just plain stupid, chances are... you probably shouldn't be saying it, anyway.
