Location: Elk River,MN | I caught this 48" fish this past weekend and it was scarred up. If I would have caught this fish early in the season I would have thought it was a result of spawning. It seems late to have this fish marked up this bad. Thought maybe it could have been a recently caught fish that had line wrapped up around it? Just curious what other people think?

| Those aren't lamprey marks. Lamprety marks are circular and round as can be. |

Location: Central Wisconsin | Sometimes they just get beat up if they like to be around stumps and snags, or in rivers it's more common. Here is one we caught in August and then September. Scars didn't really change much.

Likely a fish thats been caught, manhandled, released, re-caught, and now showin the signs. |

Location: Uxbridge Ontario | Wonder if it could also be from a type of water mite. I see bass with marks like that that I catch really shallow when the water temp is well into the 80s. With the warm temps this year, I wonder if it could be similar? |

| My take is those are from being caught before. Nets, hooks flopping around and fish be generally mishandled can cause these. I've fished Canadian waters that have virtually no pressure and the fish are clean. You don't see that as much in pressured lakes anymore.
I've also seen fish lice leave scars but they are generally located on the head of the fish. |

Location: The desert | The fish appears fine, why worry about the cause? Fish are subject to injury in a myriad of ways, just like humans. Maybe it is just emo and is a cutter. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Usually the circular or near circular marks are the result of an infection carried by muskies and pike that results in open sores, and healed scaleless areas near the open sores are an indicator the fish has that infection and the old sores have healed up. There's several variations if I remember correctly, and the warmer the water the worse the infections can be. I'll dig around when I get caught up from a road trip and see what I can find. |

| I'm going with spawning scars from this year.
Our spawn here in central WI was as late as early/mid June. Could have been pushing close to July possibly in some locales farther north. Think about it.....that's only 3+ months.
Some of the wounds we saw on fish this spring were pretty major, almost looked like they were severe enough NOT to have come from spawning bites....although I'm sure they were.
They look like they're healing up fine, fish appears to be carrying pretty good weight.

I was thinking with a possible later spring and later spawn that they're still visible. But if thats not as likely, I was thinknig along your lines...if you find out what kind of infection I would be interested to hear more about it...thanks.
