What rod do you guys use for 10" gliders? I'm looking at the St. Croix Premier 7'9" XXXH (rated 8-30oz lures). It might be a pool stick, and I wish it had a slightly softer tip, but it seems almost necessary. I mean the lures weigh around 10 ounces, which would bend the hell out of a lighter-tipped rod on every twitch, right? I'm partial to 7'6" - 8' jerkbait rods, so this seems almost perfect in my mind. What's everyone else using?

9foot Thorne Bros Predator. I know everyone is going to say that is too long, but it is perfect. I fish ALOT of glide baits and have put down the shorter rods. Joe Trueglide

Posts: 56 Location: Southern MN | I've been throwing a 10" Phantom softtail with a Tackle Industries xxh and its been working well for me, plenty of backbone but not too stiff. There may be something better out there but I've been very happy with the ti rod for multiple applications.

Posts: 299 | I use the 7'6" Legend Tournament "The Jerk" which is rated for 3-8 oz. and does well with a 10" Hellhound. I can't fire casts out there but can still cast it pretty good. So far no issues but I haven't thrown too many gliders this season.

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | I'm with Joe. Don't get that xxxh, it is an absolute pool cue. A 9' XH Predator, Big Dawg, Big Nasty, 8'6" XH Premier, I could go on and on. Big gliders are no different than bulldawgs, to the rod. Ignore the weight ratings to some extent. For example, my Big Nasty is rated 3-8 oz. but can throw pounders just fine. If you go with a rod that is "rated" to 30 oz. you will likely find that it throws the heavy baits ok, but when you have a fish on it won't flex and keep her pinned the way you like. That 7'9"XXXH has been poorly received by muskie fishermen. I've seen a bunch of them on sale or clearance over the years. I'd recommend the same type of rod you throw Bulldawgs with. It's not hard to work a glider with a 9' rod.

Ive been stuck on weather to get the XH or XXH was leaning towards the 7'6"-8' rod, and was concerned the XXH would be too stiff in that length.

I haven't used the higher end rods these guys have mentioned and don't have a ton of time on the TI but I definitely wouldn't call it a pool cue. Can't speak to the shorter lengths.

I second the 9' TI rods...I had 8'6 xh st croix and sold it bc I never used it once I got a TI rod, I love the 18' handle on the TI rods and going from that back to the 14' grip on the st croix was like night and day. I dont find it to be a problem at all for jerkbaits with the 9' length. I use the XH for my glide baits as well as my 9' sledges and bull dawgs and it works flawlessly

Posts: 424 | I own the TI 7'6''/ 8' XH and the TI 7'6''/ 8' XXH . I had no problem with them. If I remember correctly, someone correct me, all models 7'6'' / 8' are no longer in production / stock. However call James of TI : he will tell you more about it. esoxone

How much of a pool stick is the 8' XXXH Tooth Tamer (rated 8-48 oz). I presume this what everyone else is calling the "Jawbreaker".

Location: Ohio | Yes that model is a Jawbreaker, the 8'6" is the Jawbreaker Jr. and has a 2-8 oz. rating the xxxh is stiff. I can through baits from 2 1/2 oz. all the way up to the 2 pounders with the 8' xxxh if that gives you any idea of the rods action.

Do you think that's too stiff for a 10" glide bait?

Location: Ohio | Not at all I through my 10" glider that weights around 7 1/2 oz. on the Jawbreaker and it does a fantastic job. I used the xxxh in the spring to through 6" gliders that weigh in at around 4 oz. the stiffnes of the rod worked like a dream on both size gliders the rod is stiff but it does still have the flex needed to be able to work light and heavy gliders.

Posts: 1030 Location: APPLETON, WI | I actually have a custom 7'6" Jawbreaker rod, as well that I use as my dedicated jerkbait/glider rod. I struggled for the first year I started musky fishing with my 8'6" and 9'0" rods and for me, personally, it wasn't easy. I could certainly chuck the bait out there and I could get it to work.... but now, I get it work more effortlessly with a shorter 7'6" fishing rod. My 7'6" Jawbreaker rod is rated at 10 oz. and I swear, I've yet to find a bait that I've not been able to work. Topwater walk-the-dog baits, jerkbaits, stick baits, gliders, up 'n down gliders... anything I snap on can be worked with this rod and I'm not smacking the rod tip in the water each time either.

I'm liking what I'm hearing. Anyone know where to go to get the best price on the 8' XXXH? Or at least free shipping. Maybe I'll have to wait for the Christmas promos.
