The thing I don't understand is people wanting to eat large Pike. The amount of mercury in even a ten lb Pike is very high and a 15-20 lb Pike is simply hazardous to eat. Mercury poisoning can develop into a very serious condition very quickly if one eats much of a heavily contaminated fish. Large Pike have extraordinary levels of mercury. Once it gets into your system, it takes a long time to come out and if the level gets high enough, it can cause all kinds of nervous system issues and can even kill you. And that is one awful way to go.

I used to know a guy that ate everything he caught no matter how large. He said the DNR was full of it and he wouldn't listen to anyone. He ended up with a bad case of mercury poisoning and died a long, painful death. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Eating large Pike, or any large predator fish for that matter, is an extremely hazardous thing to do.

The MN DNR posts guidelines on fish consumption. It is wise to read and follow them. The safe consumption levels vary widley from lake to lake. Just because a lake looks clean doesn't mean it is. Whether one spears or not, be careful of what you eat.

I eat Pike. Not usually large pike, but I love 'em. A 24 to 27" Pike is in big trouble if I catch it.

The amount of mercury in any fish population is dependent on the amount in the system. Some of the drainage lakes around here actually have mercury advisories posted for the general population not to eat any large gamefish. others have none, and there is no reason to limit consumption to less than a meal a week of any size gamefish....other than conservation.

That said, the DNR had this right, and should be managing the fisheries in MN. Generally, politicians are notoriously crappy scientists.

Exactly, to me it isnt about the RIGHT to spear or anything it is the provisions within this bill that handcuffs the MNDNR to actually manage the fisheries.
