Location: Racine, Wi | I don't tie mine, but I wrap the wire about 5-6 times then crimp the tag end. Pretty easy to do and holds very nicely. The wraps kind of protect against a potential crimp failure, and provide strenght to the connection.

| If it's plastic coated, twist, melt plastic, put low heat heatshrink on the very end
Also, 49 strand is really quite cheap and deffinately worth it! |

| The twist melt method is very strong with nylon coated.
For the plain 7 and 49-strand you can use a figure-eight knot (what Bucher uses on his leaders)
I used to use if when fishing for bluefish because it is very easy to tie, and the harder you pull the tighter it becomes. It can slip with nylon coated though

Location: SE, WI. | You should NEVER CRIMP ANYTHING!!!! I use Buchers knot for tying 7 strand as stated above then super glue knot. Never failed. And yes, the twist weld is popular with shark fisherman, so it holds up well for musky also. I use twist weld as a back up leader on fishing trips when in a bind. For whatever reason, that black twistweld gets bit often. ;) |

Jim, I'm sure I can speak for quite a few guys on this sight when I ask why not?
I've been crimp'n and pimp'n (sorry, had to use it lol) for a long time now, and have had zero problems with crimps pulling out or breaking off, etc. Saltwater guys as well. As long as the crimp is done properly, you shouldn't have any worries. |

| Thanks guy I did figure 8 knots with extra wraps around the knot. I was trying to test it's strength and knots by lifting heavy duty tow chains and shaking it around, only thing failed was the 1/2" diameter wood stick that broke in half. I guess my knot is ok to go. |

Location: SE, WI. | Joel; I am old school and simply don't trust them. Crimps can fail and will. Also crimps make the leader more Guady and bulky. Anytime you want to compare leaders...I'm in.  My Opinion. And I am entitled to that!!!!!!!!!!!! Horsehunter, I simply use a flame from a bic lighter. The key is to just singe the coating, so do not get flame too close, otherwise the coating will catch on fire and leader material will be weakend. |

Location: Racine, Wi | I hear ya Jim. I did have a crimp fail on a mass produced leader way back in the day, and went to tying them for a period. I then decided to go back to the crimps on my home made leaders, and haven't regretted it yet. Personal preference, and I don't think there's a bad way to do it, as long as you do it correctly.

Location: Michigan | Crimps are fail-safe if you use the correct sleeve, the correct crimping tool, and crimp it in the proper manner. I am a fan of crimping, especially the heavier wire and fluoro. Many years, hundreds of crimps, no failures. |
