| Ok so Im a big guy that is trying to lose a 50 pounds. I use a calorie counter for food and exercise. The other day I threw musky baits for 8 hours and used the calculator for 8 hours of fishing. It said in 8 hours I would burn 2995 calories while fishing including my normal calorie usage in the 8 hour period...That sounded really high! So for the whole day I would have burned 5191 total calories.
I dont know if there is really a way to tell what you use, but I I found it interesting that they think it is that high. I really use the calculator to track food more then anything else.
What do you guys think? Someone must be a fitness nut on here.

Location: Tonka, MN | It does seem a little excessive but ya never know. There are too many factors that actually go into it like your height, weight, what your throwing, etc. I would say a good estimate if you were fishing for that full eight hours would be about 3000 kcals. To put it into perspective if one to were run at 7mph for 8 hours they would burn about 7500 kcals. |

| As much as I dont believe that mark, seems way high (and especially with all the snacks, candy and stuff we drink) I can tell you with being diabetic my blood sugar really drops while fishing (obviously cuz it is excercise) so im sure its up there, maybe just not 3000 |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | I think it depends a lot on what lures and equipment one is using. It seems it would be a lot more if one was throwing pounders or Cowgirls and a lot less if one was throwing smaller prop-style topwaters or small bucktails. It might also depend a bit too on how one reacts to losing a fish. It would probably be a lot less if one just said "dang" and shrugged it off and a lot more if one threw their hat down and did a dance around it. And there is the catching verses just casting thing. Seems it would be more if one caught something rather than just casting all day.
I think row-trolling could be a great exercise plan - just turn off the trolling motor and use a paddle. Paddle for five minutes, cast for five minutes, paddle for 5 minutes and so on.  |

Now we are getting into specifics that are a never ending matter. I was just trying to give a simple answer of what was burned in that time and did not equate for their intake. Its pretty much all a big giant guess when it comes down to it. |

| Any exercises or activities that are similar to what you do while fishing that are known quantities for calorie burning?
Take what the average person burns in a round of golf and multiply it times 4 for a full day fishing muskies. I think I'd feel about the same playing 4 rounds of golf with a cart as I would fishing muskies all day, but that's just a shot in the dark really.
