I know this topic is constantly brought up, but how does your night tactics vary from your day tactics? I have yet to boat a night fish; I've always heard fish a little shallower, but do you eliminate presentations? Thanks.

The only presentations I eliminate are eratic ones. Whether you fish fast or slow is up to the fish. You have to figure out how they want it. Good luck!

The chain where we have our cottage is shallow and the fish relate to weeds. At night I tend to throw top waters and crank baits that I can bring straight back to the boat. My best luck has come off the weed edges in areas where earlier in the day the fish will be in the weeds. Like a previous poster, I don't use lures like a weagle or a jerk bait with a wide swing. But, I don't know if that is the right thing to do, it is just what I feel comfortable with.

the slower the better at night. remember that the fish need to key in on just the feel of the bait after dark. jointed crankbaits have always been the best for me after dark. topwater is good as well but fish them slower then you do during the day. don't forget about big blades. the slower the better. just my two cents

A good day spot will be a good night spot, and a good day bait will be a good night bait. I use white/grey/silver for colour just so I can see it. I throw 10s and 13s probably 80% of the time. You're using the bait to feel around spots, and you need one that's forgiving if you're fishing around any kind of weed. When you can see, you can put a bait right where you want it. When it's dark, you're gonna have plenty of casts that will wind up in weeds or a little too shallow up on the rock. Spinnerbaits and sutface baits are forgiving. I think baits like 10" Beleivers and 10" jakes slow cranked in more open water would be great also. Slow down at night, fish thoroughly and take your time on spots. During the day, I'm hoping I find a fish. At night, I'm hoping one finds me, if that makes sense. Lots of guys slow roll rubber too, these baits are a lot louder than guys realize. I really steer away from lures that are prone to hanging up of need a lot of babying around snags/cover.

I slow my presentations down at night, as opposed to day. I won't rip a bucktail when it's dark outside, and even slow down my topwater a bit. However, it's tougher because you can't see, and it's difficult to know where your lure is at all times, especially during a figure 8. Practice.

JBush hit it on the head. What works during the day works at night. Believe me they hit baits fished erratically at night, and baits do not need to be dark color. I actually have some of my best luck with light colored baits at night. A slow rolled Joe, Ernie, or Jake are hard to beat at night. Hardheads slow rolled in as well. Rubber is one thing I don’t fish as erratically at night as I do cranks. You also don’t need cranks with rattles or jointed. The fish have much better eyesight at night than you think, and they still have a highly developed lateral line they rely on.

Try trolling some big baits really fast at nite. Trick is to stay off stucture by a long distance and keep one bait about 4' above the thermo and another about 4' below the surface. Monster jointed Believers will stay on top and weighted Jakes, Grannies and DDD's will rake the lower.

I like topwaters and bucktails, topwater is the best to catch a fish on after dark, can get crazy action on some lakes an hour or two after dark.

I take my sunglasses off at night. I also use less erratic baits.

The only thing that I slow down at night is cranking. Other than that I use the same pace for topwater, buckys, jerks and rubber. I really prefer smaller single blade bucks like the harrasers at night and showgirls as well. I also use jerks as well i.e. phantoms, hellhounds, hughs river type baits. The same structure I fish during the day is wahat I fish at night as well, the fish will be there at some point, you just gotta hope your lure finds em.
