| I am in need of one . which would you suggest. and where would I find it. lost two today so I am blaming it on the hook not being sharp. ( Could not be nothing that I did haha ) I did catch one thou. 333 avg hmmmm |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | My Dad gave me an EZE Lap diamond stone as a Christmas present, he said an outdoorsman should always have a means to sharpen his tools whether it's a pocket or hunting knife or fish hooks or anything else that need a good edge to do the job at hand..... Needle sharp hooks & razor sharp knives. I now have two because I thought I lost the one that he gave me.... That one now resides in my boat. The other is in my truck. It's now automatic to just drop it in my pocket when I get out to hunt or fish.
Actually I probably should post this in the "Best Products" thread. The base for the diamonds/sharpening surface is stainless steel bar so no worries about rust - unlike hardened steel files.

| Nothing fancy here, Nicholson bastard file. There are some great products on the market and no doubt they work well but being a blacksmith I like to stick with the tried & true and keep things simple.
Hook sharpening is one of those little winter projects that gets done over a few beers out in the shop with the hockey game on. No rush. I never sharpen hooks in the boat. By the time spring rolls around I have two containers with a few dozen 6/0 and 7/0 ready to go with fresh heavy duty split rigs already attached to each. When it's time to go fishing I want to be fishing, not playing tackle tinkerer in the boat. |

I'm curious, what do you call changing out the hook? I'd bet it's much faster to touch it up.

I wasn't going to comment unilaterally, but now that its' been recomended.. A couple of us purchased a Tyrant file in a group order before our Canada trip two weeks ago based on recomendations here. This file wouldn't take even the slightest amount of material off the hook. I had my old Luhr Jenson along so it wasn't a big deal. Now, perhaps the manufacturing company ran out of the original files that were designed for sharpening hooks and we got an in between batch, but the ones we purchased didn't sharpen the Mustad and Eagle Claw hooks we tried it on. Not a bash, just a warning if looking to buy one today. I have several other Tyrant products that I am quite pleased with and plan to buy the hook pick the next time I am able to see one.

| Reef we also had the same outcome with these sharpeners. I understand from some they really work but if I could I would return the 2 I bought, mine did not produce. |

Al Go with whatever works for you, Al. I don't find a need to "touch them up" much. If I feel they need attention it's just as easy to grab the split ring pliers and swap one out. 6 of one half a dozen of the other, po-tay-to po-tah-to.
Maybe the next guy has another system too, whatever works.  |

Location: Michigan | The only difference will be in the lengths. I have 6", 8", 10", and larger. The 8-10's work good, especially if you have a lot of larger baits/hooks. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | Luhr Jensen X 100 - I say that because the files IMO are the best and you need to buy a box of 100 because every time you take someone out they will "accidentally" put it in their pocket and in then their boat. |

Location: Bloomington, MN | I have used the Luhr Jensen file for years. You do need to replace them, they are not usable for more than a couple years of minimal use. The key is holding the hook steady and straight, and I use a pair of "baby" vice grips for that aspect of doing the job. |

Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | my vote is for the Tyrant Tackle file.....I've used the rest and this one cuts the best...I am a hook nazi..I even made my own double round files from 1/8" Nicholson files, but since I found the Tyrant there is no need for me to bother making them anymore.

| I don't think there is any wrong answer, also don't think there is a right answer.
My hooks are sharp before the season starts, normally over a few cold ones. I use one of the bigger files for this mass sharpening.
but once on the water, I go with the trust $4 yellow handle Lure Jensen that fits right in my back pocket. the key for me in keeping hooks sharp, especially when fishing structure when the bait is colliding, is having the file very accessible. the large files I use for mass sharpening does not fit comfortably in my pocket, there fore I get lazy on not sharpening the hooks when I know I probably should because I left the file in the front of the boat and know I'm fishing from the back, or I'm just too lazy to bend down to pick it up. Having it in my pocket does not lend to many excuses for not having hooks sharpened to perfection |

The price is up from $4.00 on the Luhr-Jensen sharpener. Musky Shop now lists them for $14.99 and Thorne Bros., $16.99. They were $6.99 in The Musky Shop's '08 catalog.

Location: north central wisconsin | I just got my replacement Tyrant files in the mail from Tilky, and it is a completely different file. The new one cuts like my old Luhr Jenson. Anyone that has a Tyrant that isn't working, I suggest you contact Jeff. There was a few 'bad' files that got out there, and I ended up with a couple of them(purchased from R&H this summer). So.. I'd recomend the Tyrant, based on the price and effectiveness. In other words, it cuts like the old yeller handle Luhr Jensen, at half the cost. |
