Maybe someone on here can help. Just got a new Gen2 HDS8 SS bundle. I have a Ranger 618 console. Looking at the options for mounting the SS transducer. I know it will really only work well at low speeds. I'm considering the "flush" to the step/direct mount. The one where I don't actually use the mount bracket at all but screw it direct to the step. Does anyone have any feedback on this? I really want this unit to have the best "view" it can while moving slowly while not worrying about it at running speed since I won't be using it then.

Any feedback on this would be very helpful, really want to get it right the first time and with the best performance possible. TJ - you got any good info on this stuff? I know they say it should also be very close to my other transducer to get the best overlay possible, but right now I'm not sure exactly where the conventional ducer is, its epoxied in/thru hull I know and should be compatible with the new unit so I don't plan on changing that, but can't look for it now as boat is covered and its raining.

Well they pretty much have to be within one foot of each other to achieve maximum benefits, according to Lowrance's literature. As to putting it under the step on the back of the hull, I've read where people have done this. As long as it has a clear shot to either side and you mount it within one foot of the 2D transducer, you should be fine. I don't know about *not* using the mount bracket though--I've not seen anything about that. As I understand it though, the optimum speed for the StructureScan system is right about 4 mph. However Doc Samson's videos do show some results at higher speeds--although you had better know what to look for in order to interpret what it's showing you. I would definitely check out his video on that stuff.

I just finished mounting mine on an 05 620. I couldn't mount under the step, didn't have clear soundings horizontially, the bottom of the hull angles downward as you leave the centerline of the boat. I temporarily mounted mine in several places, I removed my temp/speed sensor which is just above the step and mounted it there and on 3 places on my jackplate. My problem was trying to get a good signal to the port side while my kicker was down. Every place I tried I had interference. I had the best signal below the jackplate, just before the step starts. In every position I tried, couldn't get a signal over 6mph.

Walleyecentral has a Ton of info on mounting these things on various rigs. I'd check there..

Excellent advice...I am going to check out their site about mounting locations, as I'll be doing this within the next few weeks.

Thanks for the tip.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I tried toget mine within 1' of my regular ducer. Problem is that I have a shoot thru hull too and only if mounted to the back of the step by my water intake & drain plug would that be possible. Then I could uave interference from the intakes as well as worry about some structure knocking into the LSS1, the thing sticks out like a sore d!$&, its about 7" long. One rock or tree and byebye LSS1..

Well, bye-bye LSS-1 transducer anyway. The actual LSS-1 is the square interface box with the transducer and your HDS unit plugged in to it. Then there's a network port on it as well as a couple open ports for other units.

But you're right about the transducer sticking out so far--and the LSS-2's transducer (the HD one) sticks out even farther! It's one of the reasons I went with the LSS-1 actually. That, and the $300 rebate. I didn't see anything that made me want to make the jump to the LSS-2, at least not yet...

Heres a tip for this situation that worked for me. I heard this from someone else so I did it and it works perfect. Make a bracket out of thick aluminum and bend it to form an L. This bracket will be the same length and width as the bracket supplied by Lowrance. Attach this bracket to the underside of the step on your ranger. Now use the supplied Lowrance bracket in the L configuration and attach to your homemade L bracket. These brackets will look like a U now. This assembly will lower the transducer in the step so it does not interfere with those wings on either side of the step. Your bracket will be adjustable to so you can fine tune the transducer. Does a great job of gettting the transducer out of the way and you dont have that 10" monster sticking out the back of the boat.
