I am new to muskie fishing. I need a versatile rod and reel that can do a little bit of everything.

Want to keep it simple and get more complicated later on. What can you guys suggest?

I should also add that I would like to use this rod and reel for pike fishing. If someone has a used combo in good shape, I would consider buying. I would need it by this weekend.

It's hard to beat the Tackle Industries rod for quality and price. If you're going to be using this rod for pike as well as muskies, I'd recommend the 9' MH. As far as reels, there are a bunch out there in the $100 range that will work. Abu's, Shimano's, do some checking around to see which one's you like.

How much money do you want to spend? If you want to keep it inexpensive and still have a rod that will do for pike, I would go to a Gander Mountain Store and look for a Guide Series Muskie rod for lines 15 to 30 lbs. If you go heavier than that, it will be too much for pike. I use a 15 to 30 for the Mepps Giant Killer, which I throw for pike. Reels? In the inexpensive but works class, look at the Abu Garcia 6500C3 or Shimano Corvalus. I wouldn't go under that size if you are going to use the combo for muskies. You can easily spend up to $235 on a muskie reel and get what you pay for. But don't spend money you don't have.

I'd have to agree with Cast. A Gander Mt. Rod and Abu 6500C3 is an entry level set up that will get the job done. You can set up this combo for around $140.

I don't know where you live but I have seen combos like this at the pawn shop, if you really want to keep the initial investment low it is an option.

Ok guys, thanks for the replies. I don't mind spending some money as long as I am getting value. I would like to keep the combo under $350. I am going to cruise into Gander tomorrow and see what I can set up based on your suggestions.
