I'm heading up to Leech this weekend and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about where I should spend more of my time out of these two lake choices? I've heard the August bite is good on both...

Thanks

Are there enough of the reef/rock spots on the lake to handle the pressure? Or are they following a lot on those spots and I would be better off looking for more secluded weeds/shorelines? Thanks

For me, it would depend on the wind. If it isn't to windy, I'd fish Leech. If the wind picks up to much, then its off to a smaller lake. I just don't like that drowning thing.

I haven't been on Leech for a couple of weeks, but last time out I caught three low-40 inch Muskies in the weeds. Also had a really big fish make a fool out of me. (Nothing unusual there. ) Talking to people at the landing seemed to indicate the fish are scattered all over the lake, have been hanging out in both rocks and weeds, and are holding anywhere from 3 to 18 ft. And all the spots have been good at times. It also seems one needs to do something a little extra to trigger them. Just throwing a bucktail out and reeling it in may not boat to many fish. The key for me has been getting the lure down into the strike zone, making occasional contact with the weeds or rocks, and adding a direction change or two on the retrieve.

Good luck.

Just got back from Leech. The surface temp dropped 10 degrees over the 7 day period from the 7th to the 13th. Really had a hard time catching anything. Before that we saw and moved and hooked a lot of fish in the weeds or the rocks on topwaters like Rumblers and Tallywackers and on bucktails. On the North Bar we were drifting through the structure while some guys were anchored or using their trolling motor to stay just off the edge. Same for the weeds when we could find them. Fish were active followers, hot in some cases, not just slowly coming in for a look. The water has a slight bit of an algae bloom on it and its been there going on 3 weeks, so it ought to clear up soon. I second the idea of pulling out and checking area lakes when the wrong wind kicks up.

I've only fished Leech once and have never fished any lakes in that area before since I just moved across state lines, so getting this info is greatly appreciated!

Justin,

Sorry, but that is what I learned while there. I did well in the weeds, but others saw fish on rocks and different places from where I was fishing. While I did much better than anyone else I talked to, it seemed that I probably was just the one with the best luck that evening. After all, I was actually fishing a few spots for the first time and was basically in a "learning the lake" mode.

Basically, it seemed like the fish are generally in a normal summer mode with no one set pattern. It seems that most all spots can be good right now and the Muskies are quite catchable. Its not like its all weeds or all rocks or all deep or all shallow. So, fish your favorite spots and you'll have a chance.

That is just what I learned on my time there. I am sure people understand that I would rather not give out the exact location of where I caught each fish. No one expects that - do they?

I'll give you one specific though - "CJs spinner baits rock!"

Herb

Herb, your report was fine...find it interesting that people actually give a hoot about internet fishing reports ,and "complain" if noone responds to "hows fishing on lake X" - well if noone is talking maybe its outstanding? Its muskie fishing, it changes daily, probably never going to be "easy" and hot bites dont normally last long enough to make it to the internet - you have to be on the water. -so.. fish pelican island,47 meters away from the third big rock, burn a pink and yellow CJ's she will eat for sure

Justin,

I know what you mean. How often does one have a good outing and then come back the next day, or even a few hours later, and there is nothing doing? Same lure and same place and absolutely nothing. All a report is good for is what was happening at that point in time. A general active/inactive status is about all they are good for.

Actually, the hot colors were chartruese/black, orange/brown, red/black, and copper/brown. Didn't try pink, but it might have worked also. I'm sure that helps a lot too, eh?

Don't know if Leech is the best lake right now or not. I caught three nice fish in three hours on Mille Lacs a week and a half ago (Aug 5th) and a 38 incher on Minnetonka this past Saturday (Aug 13th). Seems I've been very lucky fishing ever since we buried my Dad in July. Would much rather Dad was still with us though.

Well the fishing was tough on Leech last weekend. Never had a follow. Did lose one that seemed like it was a giant. Never made it out to the rocks where they are due to having a 16' Tuffy.
