I purchased a Musky Rod on Muskies first website from a person a few months ago for about a hundred dollars and just went to use it for the first time last week. I noticed that the trigger had broken off, I filed it, and sanded it smooth and thought I could still use it it just won't have a trigger on the handle...I used it this last weekend and during one of my casts the Cork handle broke and just slipped off the rod blank. I could slide it back on but what is the right way to fasten it back onto the rod blank? Is this Common I have never seen this before either....Can someone tell me who makes these professional Edge Musky Rod???? This is a 8'2" Rod with a very large diameter cork handle........Thanks Mike

I'm no rod builder, but I have a feeling to do this right you would have to strip everything down to the bare rod blank, put a whole new handle and reel seat on, and then wind the guides back on. To do this right myself, I would probably want a rod builder to do it, but it might cost you what the used rod did.

I'm sure somebody with rod building experience will chime in with some other ideas.

You can try, but I have a feeling you won't be able to get in touch with Keith at Pro Edge. He seemed to hang up the rod building a couple years ago. I tried to contact him several times and could never get a hold of him. If you get in touch with him let me know!

Good luck. He made nice rods - I hope you can get it up and running.

No rod building experience - But, I'll bid $50 as is! You could try some Locktite superglue. Love the big fat cork handles.

Have fun!

I'm afraid it is a done deal with that rod unless you can pay another builder to fix it for you. Keith is definitely off the rod building grid, and I know a gaggle of folks holding busted Pro Edge rods. Maybe if you drive through Maple Grove MN 30 mph over the speed limit, he may pull you over, as I believe he is an officer of the law there.

Wow, then he really needs to take his site down...or put up that he is out of business. Surprised there are a lot of broken rods out there of his since he builds on all of those premium blanks listed on his site.

I think i have one of his last rods. He built one for me and i picked it up at the 2009 show. Not long after that nobody could get a hold of him. I have 2 and they are still my favorite.

As far as reattaching the cork...i'm no rod builder either but i do cut every handle short on all of mine. I make 2 cuts...one is just to cut off the very last piece of cork with maybe 1/2 inch of the rod attached. Then i cut in the spot i want to reattached to. Then you go to menards and buy a wooden dowl. Get one that will just barely fits into the blank and cut it off with 1/2 inch hanging out. Epoxy it in place and then epoxy the end pice on to that. Then i use rod wrap to go over the entire handle. Works great and never had a failure.

If the blank isn't boken and cork just needs reattaching just slop a little JB weld on the blank and slide the cork back on.
James, all rods break. Doesn't matter who makes the blank or who wraps the guides on. 95% of the time its got nothing to do with the blank or build. Keith was building a heck of a lot of rods a few years ago, so the more that are out there, the better chance a few will be busted.

I have had this happen also you can try JB weld or I use a hot glue gun and inject it in there
after that let it dry and it should be good.

If you want it done correctly, you're probably going to have to have it done by a pro. Depending on where you are located, you should be able to find a local builder to fix it for you. Sounds like you'll need to start over with a new reel seat, and then reattach the cork. I have 2 Pro Edge rods, and I really like them, one of them is 6 or 7 years old, one of the original "Weagle Rods". It's still my faovrite rod for weagles by far.

He built one heck of a stick, rod breaking was due to Diamonback going to a new blank manufacturer over seas. When you go there is only a matter of time before quality problems arise. Not sure he is still building, knew he took a promotion and the business grew ffaster than he ever though. Work, family, fishing and builiding rod I think he made the right choice.

Go to Mud Hole and watch some of their videos. Their catalog has a tutorial also. Most grips are put on from the tip down. You may be able to work backwards if you use some epoxy with filler or use tape as an arbor. With the grip off you may be able to get the broken handle off and replace it too. Good luck.

It should be done tip down but that's not really an option here unless he takes it to a pro, then he's looking at spending what he paid for it to get it repaired. How snug is the cork to the blank? Is there a gap or is it fairly tight against the blank? If its snug just glue it and be done with it. You could see if a replacement reel seat would slide on from the butt end, depending on the blank diameter a size 18mm will slide up from the butt on MOST blanks, but a reel seat repair is best left to the pros.
