| I'm taking a Musky Trip down to Cave Run lake KY Labor Day weekend to fish for Musky. Any reviews on the lake or places to stay. Cabins preferably, but campgrounds near the lake will do. Bait choices? Color selection? Any information will help. Thank you |

| I have a 15 to 16 ft 30 year old tuffy, and guys from my Chapter 47 who fish St. Clair regularly said there are plenty of areas to fish with smaller boats, and lately with the weather it has been pretty calm from what ive heard.
Just do some research on St Clair and where you could go with a smaller boat and you are likely to have a hell of a lot more success fishing st clair then you would Cave Run. Not to mention the temps should be pretty ideal.
Even if the big water is too choppy there are parts of the Detroit River you could get into that should be calm and easily fish-able for a 18 to 19 ft boat.

| Everyone I have asked told me to avoid that lake because it is so rough at times and that my boat wouldn't be able to handle it. I'm not sure exactly where we would fish, along the edges? I will take your advice and try researching it. Hopefully there are some places on the lake we can fish and catch some nice musky |

Please don't think I am flaming your post but how did you find suitable conditions to safely catch and release a 52" fish in TN the middle of August? Is there enough cold water from Norris Dam to support fishing through the summer? Is the river navigable with a conventional boat? I never considered driving south, from KY, this time of year.

Location: Knoxville, TN | Bruce, its a good question, and I will do my best to explain it. Melton Hill is unlike any other lake out there, the conditions are manmade and can vary greatly. I only start my summer musky fishing in the lake once Norris Dam starts flowing which is usuall August 1st. I never fish in water temps greater than 80, but even when the surface temps are 80, 3 feet down the water is alot cooler. The water temps I caught that fish were 73 degrees, the main channel was 64. They have dropped Norris 8 feet in 2 weeks. Thats a ton of 53 degree water that gets flushed through Melton Hill, generally the upper end is cooler and the further south you go, you will see warmer surface temps. Thats why those big fish move into the coves, as gizzard shad don't like the cooler water. The lake is totally navigable, just don't get out of the channel as there are a few shallow flats. |

Location: Warroad, Mn | To back up Billy. The first 15-20 miles of Melton Hill are trout water, and stocked heavly by the TWRA. It's a very cool water lake, with the discharge from Norris.
The locals complain that it's too cold to swim in in the summer.
It has very interesting charastics! With proper protection it has great potential.

| It looks like the Cave is already below 80 degrees (78-79 degrees according to Justin Mullins). I don't know how long it will last, but you might have a nice window to get on some shallow muskies over the Labor Day weekend. |
