| Hi guys. I caught a nice lower 40's Muskie tonight here in the Twin Cities. Nice catch and a nice release. But, I had a slight problem after I caught her that I never experienced before. Basically I had some new Muskie fisherman who were very excited about my catch. So excited that they were basically interrupting my release by asking a lot of questions and also offering un needed help which I kindly refused. They also came within 5 feet of my boat and it was a windy day as I was working on the fish.
I didn't want to be rude and tell them to get away from me so I just would ask Laurie to "focus" on what were doing her so we don't make a mistakes. They kept asking her questions as well. These guys basically got right in out face. Although I am sure no harm was meant. It did make me a little nervous as I didn't want to knock my boat against theres, or have the fish get injured by their boat as they moved away. In all of the commotion my rod broke. Which added to my annoyance.
My question to those who have experienced this type of situation more often than me. What is the best way to handle this type of situation? What can you say without sounding like an a _ _ hole? I would of glady answered all of their questions afterwards but during a hook removal on a windy day with a frisky fish made it not possible. Advice? |

| The first thing I would tell you is your boat is a fishing boat not a classic car!
I've had a few boats come up after a fish and what I do is put them to work,, telling them to jump in and help take the picture,,, they usually ask a lot of dumb questions like,, what color did you catch him on,,, or what kind of action dose that spoonplug have,,, stuff like that, I've never had any kind of a problem,, mostly just people that are very curious and sometimes they end up becoming clients. Not so bad [:praise:] |

| Where I fish there are lots of onlookers too. Mostly pleasureboaters who stop and look. Some of them never seen planer boards before and ask some really silly questions and some just stare at us like a UFO.[:0] |

| I have had this situation happen many times this year. Last year we had this really annoying guy in a esox deep v do that, I think his name was DaveP (I'm just kidding haha).
The best thing to do is stay calm. I actually enjoy the attention and I think sometimes it is good for newer musky fishermen to see a proper release. Seeing someone just as excited as me about catching a fish is a great feeling. If they get too close you can kindly ask them to back up so it doesn't cause a problem. The more we shun these curious people away the worse we look.
As far as questions they ask, at that point they got you nailed and if you want to lie about a lure or color there is no point in doing so if they can see the lure on your rod. It'll only make you look bad.

| I carry balloons + a snack tray on me skiff...should I catch one, I send out a small gas powered remote controlled bi-plane w/ a pre-made banner that says "FISH ON!"...as the onlookers gather, we blow up the ballons + I invite them onto the boat for a photo session + break out the snack tray + start popping the Coke Colas...when the food/drinks are gone a group phto is taken + we go our separate ways...later the photos are added to a scrap book to be viewed at family gatherings![:sun:] |

| First of all telling them to go away would be rude an unnecessary. Take this oportunity to explain the dos and don't of catch and release.
If you think they are too close tell them to please move over there to get a better look at what you are doing. Then proceed onto your release tachniques saying out load what you are doing and why, this actualy helps you concentrate on what you are doing at the time.
As a guide I get to do this all the time with new muskie anglers and rookies and find it good to explain the how's and why's of what I am doing. I also try to involve them in the release by asking them to cut hooks, move rods over ect ect. |

| Sponge Bob that was classic. You made me laugh out loud at work.
Should I also put a banner that says:
"Come see the catch and release of a live muskie!"
Should I also hire a band that plays: "Who Let the Dogs out" whenever I catch a fish?
