What do you guys use for you device to pull the rubberband through the nostrils of the bait?
Which rubber bands do you guys use that you think work best? I have been told to try the little tiny ones used on dental braces but there is just no way I can figure to get the other end through and get a grip on it to pull it over to the cross lock, not to mention trying it with cold fingers.

Rollie and Helens shop in Minoqua sells bait needles that can be used to pull the rubber band through the nostrils. You can also buy a large sewing needle and carefully cut a small opening in the eye in order to insert the rubber band. You want to use the smallest rubber band possible; less stretch and a faster break off for more efficient hooking.

Here's a little tip some old Italian guy showed me(Chuck Altamore). Take an old jerkbait leader remove the snap and swivel. Cut yourself a piece of broomstick for a handle and drill a hole in the half way mark. insert the leader and wrap it around the width of the handle back to the point of entry and loop it around the leader a couple times. Use needle nose pliers to make a bend in the end of the wire to hold the rubber band. It works awesome, it's easy to find and it floats. If you want to see one. pull me over next time your on the X. The Rollie and Helen's bait needles are the best. Way better than the ones you get in the rigs. I can't wait to soak some suckers this fall, that is if the trolling bite does not fade!

For a bait needle I just use a piece of .024 leader wire a few inches long and make a small loop in one end. Make up a few of these because they are tough to find when you drop them and with cold hands you are bound to drop one from time to time.

Rubberbands: Don't use the dental rubberbands you were refering to, they are too strong! Go to the dime store or a drug store and ask for a package of "ponytailers". Small rubberbands girls use in thier hair. These rubberbands are cheap and seem to work very well.
