Good 6/0 and larger treble hooks are nonexistent. I've figured a few things out tempering hooks in the sizes I want. The winners I've done so far are double tempered and perform perfectly. I broke and bent a few learning how to do it. But now after knowing what to look for I can crank out 30 in a half hour.
No one wants a hook to bend open and loose a fish, that's too soft a hook. A hook that breaks in half is too hard. The process to properly temper a hook has been figured out by hook manufacturers but they seem to stop at 5/0 treble hooks, any thing larger seems to be hit or miss. Some break, some bend.
I want all of the ones I use to bend but spring back to original tempered shape under stress. I enjoy the do-it-yourself process and knowing the connection between my bait and the fish's mouth doesn't involve crossed fingers. What do others do to solve the 6/0 and larger hook issue?
