Subject: Good leaders?

I have used many different kinds and styles of musky leaders and have not found THE ONE. I used stealth Floro leaders last year alot and found that they cut down on the action of alot of lures. So what leaders do you guys run? One kind for jerkbaits and one for everything else. I also herd guys using just split rings on the end of the leader instead of a snap and it gives good action? any advice at all would be wonderful. Im stuck on what to buy. Thanks

Stealth leaders are great and I use John's wtd leaders for gliders and fluro for everything else. Experiment in a local pond with clips and split rigs to see what works best for you.

I have run the Tyrant leaders for the past two seasons and have had positive results. I put in over 300 hours trolling on Green Bay last fall and never incurred an issue with the 30' trolling leaders. They were very durable and the snap is easy to manipulate with cold wet fall fingers. The casting leaders also perform great. They offer a wide array of lengths and weights. Jeff and Jay stand behind their products and are great to work with.

The best…The ones you can make yourself. Just buy some solid leader material (American Fishing Wire) for under $4 and twist your own with an Du-Bro twist tool ($20 or less I think). Don’t know exactly how many leaders I get from a package but it must be around 20 or so. Qty will of course depend on length of leader. I then just split ring to everything (all lures have split rings on already). If the leader starts kinking and I know I have bent it back to shape a lot I just toss it and tie on a new one.

I’ve used flouro off and on, but still mostly use my homemade jobbies. Cheaper, and I feel better about failures not happening with them compared to sevenstrand type, no snaps or swivels to fail, and flouro where cuts are possible (saw one opening weekend that was hanging by a thread after a fish).

For casting I use Stealth straight wire leaders with split rings no snap. Trolling I use 60" stealth floro leaders never had any problems, John makes the best leaders that I have ever used.

I also second the Tyrant leaders. I too have been using them the last two seasons without any issues. They are very durable and the snaps are strong. Like what was said above, there are plenty of lengths and weights as well as a different materials to choose from for every application. I have not had one fail yet, and best of all they are affordable!

I use the Tyrant Tackle leaders, well designed and super tough! Great variety of sizes and lengths. Leaders are available in steel, sevenstrand, and flourocarbon. The leaders all have high quality components and are half the price of most other manufacturers.

Wow, the Tyrant pro staff came out in full force in this thread! No offense to anyone that's posted. But has anyone not associated with Tyrant used their leaders?

Whatever you decide with leaders, just make sure you choose something with top quality components. Leaders are nothing to go cheap with. They're the weakest link between you and the fish of a lifetime. And it's why I use Stealth. You never have to worry about the quality of the material or components that they use. And you know each and every one of them is made by a musky fisherman that knows what to look for in terms of any flaws where they might have to toss one for some reason.

i have used stealth and tyrant and i hands down believe Gene Seuring's leaders at leaders and lures to be better. the 49 strand wire he uses is second to none.

For flourocarbon I like stealth leaders and for wire leaders I really have been impressed with Terminator Titanium leaders. They are very kink resistant and last many fish.

http://www.leadersandlures.com check them out. Gene Seuring who is the owner really takes a lot of pride in what he does and it shows in his products.

Any good leader is largely the end result of the quality of the components and care in quality control. There isn't any 'hands down best leader' out there. There ARE several brands that are well made, have withstood the test of time, and are sold by muskie fishermen to muskie fishermen.

There are basically three types of widely accepted leader material. Solid stainless wire, fluorocarbon, and multi-strand. If properly made, all will do the job on any cast and crank presentation. Some folks have preferences on which material they like for gliders and topwater. I don't, particularly, I'm more fussy about length and weight so the lure does what it's supposed to. For my creatures, it's 100% multi-strand, and I make them myself and have for over 30 years.

What you see here frequently is -I-use-this-brand-and-because-I-like-it-it's-the-best! Ask the questions that draw out the features and benefits that might actually make the product actually superior, and KUDOS to those who offer that detail without denigrating the rest in the process.

Don't expect any product to be perfect. None exist.

I picked up a 3 pack of these (solid steel jerkbait leaders) and so far have had no complaints.

I make all of my own leaders using top quality components. Doing it this way I have complete control over quality and sizes. Another benefit is getting 3 or 4 leaders for the price of 1 bought leader.

I used to use Terminator Titanium leaders exclusively for 7 years. Then, in one season, a buddy and I both had a couple fail either right at where the snap contacts the loop at the end of the leader, or by basically falling apart (strands pulling loose, breaking, etc.). The strands are easy to see when they go...the leader breaking by the snap happens without warning.

That's right these are stainless steel and built to last. The hardware will wear out before the leader will show any signs of old age. Of course being steel they will not get cut - ever! When you get two national known guides like Frank Walsh and Doug Johnson getting over 50 muskies on just one leader (not to mention all them pike too), you know these leaders are the best for the job.

The only leaders I use besides one I make myself are stealth tackle leaders. I like the fact that they are tied and crimped.

I would be keeping a very close eye on those leaders.

I've had one bad experience with a Terminator Titanium leader, lost a mid 40's fish on a bulldawg during a tournament when the leader broke right next to the snap and that was enough for me. Not bashing them but I would not personally recommend them to anyone.
Past couple years I've been using Stealth and Tyrant fluoro leaders and have no complaints. For jerkbaits, I use both Bucher and Spro leaders.
