Hey fellas-

This weekend, I will be celebrating the end of my bachelordom with a long weekend of fishing (among other things) at Hunter's Point Resort on Mille Lacs. I've fished the lake maybe half a dozen times, but never this early... and now, looking at the weather report, it looks like we're scheduled to be out there right at the front end of a big cool-down. The combination of really big water, unfamiliar water, unfamiliar time of year and changing weather pattern has me at a little bit of a loss for planning how to fish it. It's going to be a great time regardless, but I'd really love it if someone from the party managed to latch on to a musky... particularly since not everyone attending typically chases muskies.

Anyone have any suggestions for fishing strategies given these conditions? Or any tips for fishing the lake this time of year? Not looking to steal anyone's favorite spots, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd start in the Southern bays. Macs, Isle and Wahkon. Work the edges with gliders and Big Game minnow baits. Being a late Spring, you may encounter a monster. Have fun and if all else fails.......fish smallies!!

I wouldn't spend any time chasing muskies with people that have little to no experience fishing them. The walleyes are going pretty good out there and are easy to catch. I would chase walleyes with the inexperienced fishermen, and then if you have time to get away by yourself I would maybe try for skis. Tough lake for skis though.

Some of the guys will definitely spend some time going after walleyes... but pretty much everyone that's showing up for fishing is interested in trying for muskies at least part of the time, and has some experience in it... some just have a little more or less than others. Plus, I love ruining a perfectly good walleye fisherman by showing them a musky from time to time!

Best advice I have ever heard, and stop in Bock on the way up... I believe there are 2 bars in town, but you guys will only be interested in one of them.

Hehe... Well, we didn't make it to the bar, but with the amount of beer and whiskey we had at the cabin, there was really no need. Thanks to all for the fishing advice! My best man got his personal best- a 50"er that popped a bucktail he made right at boatside. We saw a few others in the same size class, but this was the only one we put in the boat. Pretty much everyone had northern action the whole time- averaged about 5-6 a person caught with a lot more seen on the one day we were all fishing. Some guys really got on the walleye in one of the other boats, which made for pretty much the best breakfast ever.
Now to rest... I think I sprained my liver.
