Posts: 272 | Might be talking out my (donkey) here, but my guess is it would matter what brand of TM you're running. Reason I say this, is I had to reconfigure my boat battery wires and the 12/24v termination plug when I sold MotorGuide and put the Terrova on my Alumacraft. It came from the factory wired for a MotorGuide. I remember having to get a short battery "jumper" wire to make my configuration proper for a MinnKota. I like your thinkin'......can't wait to hear the responses.

Location: Des Moines IA | My Tuffy is wired so that the trolling motor plug creates the 24 volts for the trolling motor. If your set up is like mine, I don't think it will work. I cut the alligator crimps off my charger, and wired in a trolling motor plug so I could plug straight into the boat and charge both batteries with one charger.

Posts: 280 | Pretty sure it doesn't work that way. You could however keep a second battery jumper handy and connect your batteries in parallel to charge them using the 12v charger. Or better yet get a 2 or 3 bank charger.

Posts: 272 | I called my electrical engineer buddy and posed this question because it was killin' me. He said that without using some extra jumpers or ledes to your batteries.... or without customizing your charger (read: adding alligator clips) it couldn't be done. If you wanted to tinker with a charger, you could do it. But as far as flipping over the batter compartment door, taking an out-of-the-box battery charger and clipping two gator clips.......no go.

For a little while, I had a 12v charger with a 24v system. I had to either connect the batteries in parrallel or charge them 1 at a time. Doing either way, I never got a full charge according to the tester on the MinnKota. Buying a 2 bank charger is the way to go. I didn't want to spend the money either at first, but after using one now, I will NEVER go back!

Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Disconnect the trolling motor batteries from the boat's power system. Use jumpers to hook the two batteries in parallel. Hook the charger up to the positive and negative poles on one of them (don't go in series using the pos pole from one batt and the neg pole of another). Plug it in. Give it time to refresh as you are now charging one large battery system. If you want, you could move the charger over to the other battery part way through and charge again from there. I've done this plenty of times. Nothing wrong with two 12V batteries in parallel hooked up to a 12V charger. I keep extra jumpers in my boat in case my charger dies. Its a lot easier to find 12V chargers than it is to find onboard chargers, etc. Walk into any wal mart, napa, etc you can find a 12V charger. So by having the jumpers, I can still charge my batts using commonly found gear. Jono Edited by Jono 6/6/2011 4:44 PM

Posts: 5874 | Get a 2 or 3 bank charger. MinnKota, Guest or DualPro. These things just keep working, and one plug in and your done. No tinkering with jumpers, connections, removing, stowing, etc. I would never go back to a protable charger.

Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Yep a three bank is the way to go. I was trying to communicate how you might charge two 12V batts with a 12V charger at the same time WHEN YOU DON'T have a multibank charger. I think the question was "i have a 24 system and a 12 v charger, what do I do?". In this case, putting the batteries in parallel and using the 12V charger is an option. It's a good thing to know for the reasons I mentioned above. I have a three bank minnkota in my boat and its been great. Just plug it in and off you go. If you have the money, throw it at a multibank charger and like shep said no more messing around. Jono
