| I know I am NOT Doug Johnson but I think I can give you some advice about trolling LOTW. I just returned from a week at the Angle, water temps were in the upper 40's to low 50's,water level was about 3 1/2 feet low. All I can say is be CAREFUL! Last Sunday,I had to tow another boat 9 miles back to camp after they hit a reef and broke thier prop shaft and lost the prop, not a pretty sight! Navigate with extreme caution,if you do not know where you are /your exact location,go SLOW!
Enough about the safety briefing and on to trolling basics on the Angle. Lures used are mainly 10" Jakes and Believers.Inside line is set about 50 feet out, outside line is about 55 or more feet.Soft tip rods are prefered to help absorb the shock from hitting rocks.Troll islands that have access to deep water near main channels. You should be in about 9 to 15 feet of water, this means at times, you can touch the island you are trolling around, while other islands, you will be 200 yards from shore. You must be cautious, hitting rocks with your boat is almost a given,I hit 4 during the week.Luckily,I did no damage to my boat. The fishing is slow, lots of short strikes and not much happening.I only got 1 for the week,my partner got 2,I lost another 2 and had about 4 to 6 hits every day
If you can find the Sept./Oct/Nov 1999 issue of In-Fisherman,there is a detailed article on how to troll LOTW.
Good Luck,be SAFE and let me know how you do.Paul |
