Subject: Jerk-bait rod?

Looking to purchase(without breaking the bank) a Jerk-bait rod and was curious to know if anyone has any suggestions/tips. I was looking at the shimano compre's 6'8", anyone use them? Also, what type of leader(piano-strand) should I be using? I'm having issues with my gliders not gliding in the water. I tried the downward twitch pause and the other techniques as well, gets frustrating. Any help would be much appreciated.

I just bought one this week. St. Croix Premier PM63XHF. I went old school, classic. Quite frankly, I find those longer rods annoying for jerk bait fishing. I know all the benefits of a longer rod - longer casts, better figure 8's. I decided to take my chances. I find it much easier to work a jerkbait with a shorter rod.

I also use a single strand heavy leader.

Musky Innovations make a few different 7'0" and 7'6" rods in a variety of series that handle a multitude of lure weights. St. Croix's new Mojo Musky series, I believe, is a 7'2" XH jerkbait rod. Okuma makes a 6'10" jerkbait rod, as well. Black River Rods has a 7'0" XH jerkbait rod... or you can go with the numerous other custom manufacturers currently in the industry.

I would agree... for finesse fishing and optimum walk-the-dog / jerkbait / glider performance - I would personally opt for a shorter rod. Makes things easier when trying to finesse the bait, IMO.

And yes, to the single-strand wire leader. Although, some guys just use a split ring to attach the lure to their main line to keep weight down and obtain the best possible action from the lure. I personally just opt for a single-strand wire leader (no ball bearing/swivel) and have no issues at all. I've been able to achieve some pretty glides out of my Phantom Softail lures...

I just ordered a 7'6" jerkbait rod myself because I hate trying to work these baits with a 9'0" rod...

what gliders are you using?
i use a 8' 4oz-16oz xheavy/fast and a 7'6" 2oz-10oz heavy/fast MI bulldawg rods. either rods can handle any glider or jerkbait. from a 4" phantom to a 10" phantom
no swivel is a must. i like Pearson Plugs jointless leaders. they really work good. i noticed a big difference in the lenth of the glide and action with all my gliders. i use shrink wrap on my other leaders to make the connection from leader to snap solid like a Pearson and that works great to.

I can work a glide or a jerkbait no problem with my 9'3" okuma. IMHO if you can work baits with a longer rod, do so, your at an advantage.

Musky Innovations 7'6"XH pro series is what i use for all Jerkbaits. It is the best rod I have used for this. I have had many clients buy them from me after trying them out for a day.
Good Luck,

st.croix has many options in different price ranges and warranty levels (mojo, premier, legends) the rods that handle 2-6oz lures have the fast tip required for jerks and glides. And those come in several lengths. Muskie fishing= A jerk on one end of the line waiting for a jerk on the other end.

The issue it seems is with all the "Jerk-baits" large or small. The Phantoms, Rapala gliders, hell-hounds, etc.

I bought a 7'4" H Okuma EVX rod - it's rated 2-10oz.
I realy like this rod, has a lot of backbone and will throw a wide variety of jerkbaits, gliders, and WTD topwaters.
(e.g. - Suicks, Sledges, Phantoms (small and large), Rapala Glidin' Raps, Hellhounds, Dancin Raiders, Vipers, etc.)

Hope this helps!
