Anybody using a RCN60HC abu record looks like a good beefy reel? Would like to know how others has held up and if it an worth the worth the money. i would be using it for a all around reel double tens, top water, cranks, gliders, tubes, 1-5 oz lures.
thanks

I own one. Do a search and you'll find plenty of info. It's served me well and remained in good working condition. That said, I wouldn't and haven't used it to throw 10s. In fact, I don't use it for 8s. You're just not gonna get the pull power out if it comfortably to handle baits that displace mega amounts of water. I primarily have used mine for topwaters, gliders, smaller cranks and twitch baits and spinner baits.

my brother has one it does'nt have the torque to pull in 10's very good at all. works well for mag dawgs pulling in the slack fairly quickly, probably work well for small bucktails and some other jerkbait stuff!

It's one of the only reels that occupies a price point between inexpensive ($85-$120) and the pricier stuff ($250 and up). I've had a number of them since they were introduced and found them to be a pretty good reel for most applications but as some others stated, wouldn't be my choice for double 10's. They are definitely smoother operating and easier to manage than a standard Abu 6500. Not at the same level as their more expensive Revo series or Daiwa Luna, Shimano Calcutta but hey you're paying $100 less.

I own one. It's just over a year old and had the anti reverse bearing go out. I was kinda shocked to see its made of plastic. I like the reel a lot but for the price I thought it would of been a little better quality. I use itas a all around reel as well and like everyone has said 10s can be rough.

I sent my Record in 3 times, first time the pinion gear went bad, second and third time the handle nut pulled threads off of the shaft and came loose. They offered to switch to a 6500 inshore after the 3rd time and it has worked great for 3 years now.

In my opinion you will be very unhappy with your choice if you go with an Abu Record for throwing double 10s. My own personal experience with the record was that when throwing the 10s it was unpowered and was far too much work to crank the baits. Additionally, the reel needed to be sent back for repair shortly after using it for this purpose.

(and for the "record" the above is how you rip product without getting deleted)

I doubt any muskie reel has ever gone bad because someone caught too many muskies on the reel. Reels break most often because of wear and tear on the pinion gear, anti-reverse, and drive shaft. I do not mean to insult you or downgrade your catch (Congrats on a 50, I am still looking for my first 50), however catching that fish says nothing about the quality of the Abu Record. Unlike most any other kind of fishing, fighting muskies provides the least amount of wear and tear on a reel.

Thanks for all the replies. what would be a good all around reel for the same money as the abu record that would be suitable for throwing some 8s an 10s, the revos are a little out of my price range.

Look for a used calcutta 400b. You can usually get them for around $150 or under.

Most IAR bearings have the retainer made in nylon, nothing wrong with that.

I have about 20 6500 c3's the ones 15 to 25 years old are still strong and the ones 6 months to 3 or 4 years old are failing thats real progress. I still use a lot of older 7000's. My first experience with Shimano wasn't that good but I might have to try again at a higher price point.
Anyone tried the Penn International ?

I agree with all above, not the right reel for 10's. I use my Record for throwing cranks and some rubber, but the heavy baits still seem to make this reel "flex"a little. Like 'tswoboda' said I would look for a used 400b. I have heard good things about Luna's as well. Never threw a Penn International. I just ordered my first 400b so i will get back to you with my experience after the season.

C3's and C4's up to 6500/6600 size are still made in Sweeden. They have never moved that line to China.

First off, I do like the Record reel. But it is not the reel for cowgirls, nor is the calcutta to me at least. That being said, I will probably never buy a second one. If you tear them down, along with 6500's, one of the first things you'll notice is the similarity. It's not a coincidence. IMHO, it's 10$ worth of improvements on a 85$ reel, but they are happy to charge 160 for the thing.
I have had to replace bearings in mine, and the antireverse bearing is in bad shape, but I have to replace the side plate with it to replace it.
IF you don't mind a somewhat larger reel, and a clutch, you might look into a saltist 20 - That should pull the tens w/o any problem. For me, I like the Abu's, for regular work. I'll stay w/ the 6500's though, and tear them down and grease them frequently.
