I just bought a 9' st. croix rod for burning blades and was wondering what reel to get. Keep in mind I throw lefty. I know this topic has been pounded to death but anyone using the abu 7001's out there let me know what you think. Also did shimano use to make a 700 series in a left hand model? Anybody got a used one for sale?

Please help.

I have used the 7001 before I discovered the Avet reels. I would blow through several of them a season and my arms would be very tired. The 7001 will not hold up for truly burning the way an Avet reel will. If you are truly burning left I would recommend doing using the search option and typing in AVET. Hope this helps. I really like my Avet lefty.

Why not try a Revo Toro Winch 51 or 61?

For burning you want the Avet MXJ in Lefty. A winch works OK but it will not burn the blades. I am currently returning my JX reel for the MXJ because the JX is just too big. MXJ two speed reel with mag cast control is what you want.

I was the guest who posted 2nd. I still have 3 7001 reels. I have them now as back ups and also on a back up big rubber rod. I use to blow through them frequently for burning double 10s. I have a few left hand revos. As stated those will not work for burning 10s. I have an AVET MXL 5.8 M.C. and it is on my 3rd year which is quite long for a reel for me. I sent it in this spring and had new bearings put in it. If you decide to buy an Avet do some research as these are a bit different types of reels. The SX is the smallest, then the MX, then the JX. I use and MXL which is a wider spool than the MXJ. Both will work well. It is very important to get the M.C. (magnetic cast control) if you get one. If after doing some research you decide that a level wind is a must, then the 7001 or if the Shimano Calcutta TE is still made in left, that would be the way to go. You will not truly be "burning" in big blades so speak with that option though. Hope that helps.

I have the magnetic version of the SX and it is comfortable and plenty big/durable in my opinion. Very happy with it.

I'm not trying to start an arguement about what is burning or not but thanks for your input anyways.....

Outside of that I appreciate the comments that actually help. Looks like I am getting one of the AVET M.C.

Any more advice is greatly appreciated.

I have a 7000i lefty for sale if anyone is interested in one. It is hardly used with 80lb Power Pro. I'm switching to the Revo Winch! Reel is too big for my likings.

I see a lot of the single speed Avet's out there, will that not do the job? Do you switch speed's when a fish is hooked?

thanks!

I use the single speed Avet MXL 5.8 M.C. The reason I went with a single speed instead of the dual speed is that if I want to slow roll big blades I have other reels for that, "ie" the winch. I also wanted less items that could go wrong with a reel as I have broke way too many different brands in the past and I felt the dual speed had more parts I could break.

Their are a following are a few things to know about an Avet reel:
1)My favorite feature is the drag settings. Their is 4 settings; locked down, fighting (some tension goes out), live bait (a lot of drag goes out, but it is not free spool) and free spool. About a week ago I was rigging my rods back up and realized how much I use this feature when fighting fish. While this might be a hard feature to get used to, I now use it nearly on every fish I catch, particularly on boat side hits. I wish all my reels had this feature. Loosing star drags and hitting free spools does not always work so well and cost me and a boat partner in a tournament in the past.
2)Read the directions first before trying to set the reel. Damage can occur by not doing this.
3)Get the M.C. (magnetic cast control) The settings go from 1 to 5. I find I run mine a 3 most often.
4)This is a noisy reel. It is not at all quiet or smooth like a Trinidad. (This is the reason I don't have the dual speed for slow rolling which is usually done in the evening or night. I want to hear Loons not grease and bearings smacking.)
5)To me this is very ego dynamic. I rest my thumb right inside the frame while reeling and have fished for a few days straight from 6am to 9pm without wrist fatigue. That is the only reel I have ever been able to do that with. Obviously the Toro Revos are more ergo dynamic, but I won't speed the lures in with those all day.

I may have forgotten a few things. Remember this is a different type of reel and may take some getting use to. I would imagine some would really dislike them. I really like my Avet and will get one again. As I mentioned, item 1) is a big feature to me that I use on every fish. For a left handed reel this is one of the few choices available.

Sorry dude i didnt mean it that way. Some people are happy burning a bait on a Calcutta and then some people then burn with a Trinidad.
