Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | JMO but I have never been able to use a spinnerbait rod very well for musky and pike fishing. Just feels wrong with spinning reels. I prefer the bait caster with a "crankbait" rod. One vote for the crankbait rod plus you already ahve a spinnerbait rod setup. James

Posts: 1516 | Tex, are you asking about a bucktail (spinner) rod or a spin casting rod?

If you wanted to add a different rod to the lineup, I'd pick up a 9' rod capable of the heavier baits like pounders and that doesn't load up as much on figure 8's with big blades. Rods like St. Croix's Big Nasty, or a Thorne Bros. Predator 9'XH come to mind. It's really dependent upon your style, what you throw and your preference of rod action. If you don't throw a lot of big baits, or don't want a 9' rod, perhaps you could look at the St. Croix Premier series, or the Sling Blade or Big Dawg. It really boils down to what you intend to use the rod for, and to some extent, what type of reel is going on it.

Posts: 1030 Location: APPLETON, WI | +1 What kind of baits are you throwing with your current rod and what kind of baits are you looking to throw with your next rod? What's preventing your current rod from throwing spinnerbaits or crankbaits right now?

Posts: 682 Location: Sycamore, IL | I would be looking for a rod for jerk baits/gliders/walkthedog style baits...maybe 7'6" or so ...or another 8'6" with a bit lighter action for smaller lures. Matt

That being said, if you're looking for a dedicated jerkbait / glider rod - you're going to want something a tad shorter than you'd normally use for cranking bucktails or launching large plastic/rubber baits. A bit of a shorter rod will enable to control and glide the bait with ease. Also, you won't be slapping the water with a longer rod either. Not saying a longer rod won't work for jerkbaits, some guys a longer rod just fine for gliders. Okuma makes a 6'10" XH for jerkbaits. Black River Rods makes a 7'0" XH, as well. St. Croix has their Mojo Musky line which includes a 7'6" XH. Any of these rods can be purchased on eBay right now at some pretty sweet pricing. I found the Okuma 6'10" for something like $104 + FREE shipping. The Black River Rods is on eBay for something like $107 + FREE shipping. And I believe when I looked last week, the St. Croix - Mojo Musky series was $139 + FREE shipping. And I only know all of this because I'm currently shopping for a jerkbait rod, as well. ![]()
