Posts: 512 | Hey guys, just replaced my impeller in my merc. 115 4 stroke. Hooked it up and it seems to work but i swear it use to push water harder before i changed it, so im worried i may have flubbed something during the replacement. Seems to sputter/spit more than i remember too.. Can it work even tho i may have done something wrong? Or would it not work at all? thanks Dave

Posts: 3504 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, How long did you have the motor running? Reason I ask is there are some motors that will restrict water flow until the motor is up to temperature, then will flow freely when everything is warm. Not sure if this is the case with yours, but something to look into. The other thing you might try is to just take the end of a paper-clip and push it up the stream hole with the thought there might be a tad bit of debris that has gone through the system and is restricting flow. If something was mixed up in the system, I doubt you would see any flow at all. I did that one time on a small 6hp johnson motor when I didn't slide the water pump tube back into the correct slot. Lower unit was getting a bunch of water, but the engine was not. Ended up taking off the lower unit again and reinstalling.. Steve

Posts: 512 | The video i watched said it turned clockwise, so install impeller into the housing counter clockwise, which i did... I thought of that as a possible problem.. do they all turn clockwise?? I will try the other suggestions also. I ran it a few weeks ago and it just seemed to pee harder then it did this time... thanks again Dave

Posts: 208 Location: Sun Prairie, WI | I would just hit the key for a second and note the direction of the flywheel spinning. (before taking in apart again) then remove lower unit and put impeller in so its flaps bend back with the rotaion of the motor. Good luck.

Posts: 3504 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, Not sure if you would need to disassemble and reassemble this whole thing because since the fins are rubber, the force and direction of the shaft turning (I think..) would essentially cause the fins to set-up correctly in the housing, just due to the friction between the housing and the fin ends themselves. The fins are not all that much larger than the housing itself so it would not take much for them to reorient themselves. Steve

Posts: 512 | I was thinking that myself, you would think they would have to.. pretty sure its in there correctly anyway. If the rain ever stops, i will run it again and try the earlier ideas here thanks again guys Dave

Posts: 222 Location: c.wis | make sure you got the key into the keyway, if you didnt the key is just pushing against the center of the impeller. also ive noticed that if you have lake with lots of alge and other sm floating debris it can get sucked into the engine- you can put a pipe cleaner, small wire brush into the hole where the water exits and make sure its not clogged/ or gummed up my .02

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | Pull the hood and follow the discharge hose back from the outlet nozzle. Pull the hose off at the nozzle end and run the motor again. If there is debris in the hose, you will likely get it out this way. Also, try massaging the hose all the way up to where it connects to the head. If there is sand in there, you'll feel it. If sand works its way into the discharge hose it will usually not make it thru the nozzle. You'll see a split stream or a restricted stream when this happens. If you are on the water and see this happen you can poke a steel leader into the nozzle and just feel for blockage. If it's there you can pull the hose off the nozzle and let it blow out. I've done this more than once. Usually it happens at shallow boat launches when you stir up the bottom.

Posts: 512 | just tried it again, and it still doesnt seem to be streaming as hard as before.. Doesnt seemed to be clogged. Guess i shouldve ran it before i put the new impeller in so i had a fresh memory reference in mind! Need to drop it in the lake this weekend and see if it seems better before i tear it apart again!
