Posts: 90 Location: Athens, Ohio | Is there any specific reason for color of a boats' hull? Is a light or dark colored hull more spooky to fish? Some of the boats I've looked at have had black on the bottom , some white. I was curious as to if there is a real reason for these colors or if this is simply how the boats were ordered by the dealers or owners. Thanks

Posts: 717 Location: Grand Rapids, MI | An old wise muskie angler once told me to think about how a fish is created. Fish like muskies have white bellies. Why is this? For camouflage purposes. If one fish is looking up at the white belly of another fish, it would be hard to see it against a blue sky, a cloud covered sky, etc. Like the pic below. How much better can you see the dark tips of the shark vs the white of its belly? Attachments ---------------- ![]()

If your trolling motor, kicker, big shiny prop, propwash while trolling, and the overal presence and sillouette of the boat doesn't bother a fish that will shoot out from underneath and hit a bait, color sure as heck won't either.

Posts: 17 | In Florida, all saltwater area's I have been to boats are all white. I have a black 690vs. The differance in amount of heat reflected is amazing. The darker colors will fade faster also

Posts: 551 Location: Columbus, Georgia | I have heard some folks say that white bottom boats spook Muskies on the follow. Maybe someone else has heard such rumblings. I know that Doug Johnson has some observations about that. Maybe he will view this thread ...

Over all I think I've had my best luck on boatside muskies with a green boat, but I really don't have any scientific records to prove this one way or the other, I've caught many fish on figure-8s out of every color boat, and so have my boat partners. I wouldn't worry about it too much! Go with what looks good to you. Doug Johnson

Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I've had light blue , gray, and now white. I see absolutely nothing to convince me one is better or worse. I've scared away just as many fish with each color. If you want to spook fish wear bright colors, move around a lot, and stamp your feet. I garantee that'll do the trick. Boat hull color, no, I doubt it spooks fish at all . If you want to spook fish crank the trolling motor up to high and cycle it on and off and on and off, run the power trim and tilt on your big motor, run over them many times with your graph pounding 3000 watts, but hull color? No. Don't think it matters a bit. Just get something you enjoy looking at.

Location: Eastern Ontario | Years ago (many many years) I wanted to paint my canoe and my Dad wouldn't let me paint it grey or blue. He said if I flipped it I wouldn't be seen. I once read a story about an old guy that fished in Kentucky streams who painted his boats brown and attached brush to the sides....not good on a Ranger Edited by horsehunter 4/26/2011 7:10 AM
