Location: Hugo, MN | In reading all the things people would want in a new 500 size Shimano low profile reel, it got me thinking. How nice would it be if you could special order reels like the Calcutta TE with customized options such as:
Gear ratios in three ranges: 4.5, 5.0, 5.8 or so
Your choice of a power handle, including knob style and counterweight
Custom color whiffle spool
Custom anodized accent pieces, such as star drag and handle
Bearing upgrades
and on, and on.
Now obviously we'd be limited to parts that already exist, or would fit, but I think a lot of guys would pay the price to get the exact reel they want. I highly doubt ANY manufacturer would ever offer this, due to the cost on their end, but it would be fun. |

| This really wouldn't be all that difficult to pull off. They could still mass produce everything so prices wouldn't be too outrageous. A few extra bucks for labor cost since they'd have to wait until your order was put in to put it together, but it's definitely a possibility. |

Location: In a shack in the woods | They do it in japan with bass reels. I have a bassmaster mag with a big japan article. A guy buys a reel then gets the whole thing tricked out with custom colors and set up to run 2-4pm flouro for the over pressured fish. I'd do it if it was offered over here. |

I'm right handed, winding with my left hand has always been the correct way : )
They are perfect for me . I'm left handed and reeling with my right hand is the right way. It always seems odd to me to see people cast with their right and then switch hands to reel with their right. Seems so natural to me to cast with my left and reel with my right. Same with my spinning reels. |

In terms of building your own reel. Would be nice. A person can get Avet reels in custom colors for a 50.00 added charge. They also make a high speed reel that can be cranked with the left hand while a person can hold the reel in their right hand. |

I guess this means that a right handed reel is actually for left handed people and vise versa. |

| For a graduate engineering design class I took in college I looked into making a custom gear set for either a Curado 300 (going to 5:1) or Calcutta 400TE (going to 6:1). To get everything right involved too much margin for error to make it practical.
Getting the correct size of the pinion gear and main gear without knowing the actual tolerances used in the subject reels made it a nightmare. For example, the gears from the subject reel may have been on one tolerance extreme, and a margin of error in the manufacturing process of the new gears could completely through things out of spec (the exact size and tolerances of the gears are unavailable for the public). Add into that the metrology error involved with simply measuring the gears. Even with a good set of calipers there would still be an associated error.
Now, I suppose I could have bought 25 sets of gears, had 25 people measure them 25 different times in random order and greatly elimate that error, but then there's still selection of gear material.... You'd be amazed at how many different alloys are considered "brass" or "stainless steel" (also can't get that from a manufacturer). Appropriate manufacturing process (everything from a CNC, to powder metallurgy, to casting) is yet another hurdle. |
