If you haven't already purchased that boat, I say don't. You'll be much happier witha 16' Lund tiller. Specifically, check out the predator and stinger models from the early 90's. Any Lund tiller will be far better than that starcraft, though. Finally, if your budget allows the Ranger 680T is a great boat you should be able to find for around $5,000.

The one I found is actually a Sea Nymph....Looks to be a be a sharp keep all the way to the top of the bow cap.

No I can't spend 5k. I'm sure I'll have that into it eventually. But not all at once.
I want to stay away from fiberglass.

With that said, why will the Lund models be better?

Well I brought one home. Turns out it's a 17' Sea Nymph. Not as wide as some of the newer boats, but for the money, I think it will serve me well.

Nice! Similar to but looks a lot nicer than the one we brought home last year:

Thanks everyone. I'm excited to get to work on this one and build it how I want.

The interior was trash. Water logged foam, and rotted wood decking. Two layers no less. I knew this going in though.
The interior as it was, was wide open with a small front deck.
I'm going to remove the port console, and then extend the length of the front deck so it extends to the back of the starboard console.

I'm going to have it scrubbed, and gluvit installed on all the seams and rivets in a week or so.

Check out this picture of what was left of the interior.

Everything there was in the boat. Beer bottles and cans, anti-freeze jug, a couple of small liquer bottles, lots of walnuts, a bunch of rotted wood, you name it.

I did find a fixed pedestal for the helm seat, and a taper lock base. Some other little stuff too.
At least the hull was in good shape. No dents or dings, and what not.

One other thing too.....My last aluminum was a Pro Guide V16 Tracker. I liked it. Perfect for just me or maybe even three people. I added a 24 volt P/D, a 4stroke merc kicker, and some other little stuff. I really did like it.

But this boat makes me realize how foolish it was to buy a brand new boat. I'll probably have 2k in this tops when done. And if things turn out like I want will look and function like a new boat.

One last major decision, and I'm still not sure what to do.....

Tiller or console. What would you do with a 17' boat?

Money isn't a factor because I'm going to need a new steering system. I'll be out approximately the same amount of $$ to convert to a tiller, or buy a new steering system.

Hiya,

Looking at the design of the stern of the boat, I think you are tied to a console model. The handle for the motor would be too low and always be hitting the splashwell. I'm not sure, but I would bet you might not be able to cut down the front portion of the splashwell since that would act as some support for the rear of the boat.

That layout is wide and deep, so I think room will not be an issue.

Also, if you are doing some longer runs with the boat, having the console is definitely more comfortable (in my humble opinion). Plus, you can put a larger motor on it with the console.

Thanks guys. Yes I am going to keep the console. I'm going to get rid of the port console, and keep the starboard console. I am going to move it back in the boat approximately 6-12" for a longer front deck...

BTW guys, GreatLakes skipper in Racine, has 51" livewells. If you don't pick them up in person, the best place to buy is from their Ebay store.

I bought one yesterday for $80 which included the shipping...

I wanted a livewell, and the price and design was right

Maybe others here would be interested in retrofitting one.

Well that place came through with very fast shipping and a nice product---the livewell.

I decided to strip it down, and give it some fresh paint too.

This is what it looks like now....

This is what it looks like now. Even though you could never tell it from this picture the plan is to have it done by the end of next month, and be on the water down in Indiana.

Heck of a job on the boat. Did you put any support or foam under the plywood base? I have a 16 ft Lowe that I would like to do the same thing to
