Location: Oswego, IL | How much braid do you actually use on each reel when spooling up for the start of a season? 75 yards each? Figure on a toro 60, and winch 60. Thanks

Posts: 1270 | I would sooner have to much than not enough! ON a Toro 60 if you put 125yds of 20lb. mono on for backing you will then get about 100yds of 80lb. braid on top of it.

75 yds. Then turn that around half-way through or at the end of the season.

Posts: 682 Location: Sycamore, IL | What do you guys use to measure how much line you are putting on your reels? Is their some kind of line counter device or do you just eyeball it...I would like to get 4 reels filled from one 300yd spool. Thanks.

I typically buy 150 yd spools. Put pretty minimal backing on it, then try to cram the entire spool on to the reel. I could see doing 3 reels with a 300yd spool. But from my experiences, if you only put 75 yds of braid on... sooner or later I always end up having to take 10' off here and there and all of a sudden theres not enough line left. Others are much more experienced fishermen than me but one $20 (150 yd) spool for each reel is not all that pricey and is what I'll continue to do.

Location: Hartford Wi | After doing it as my profession for the last 5 years and guiding, I spilt a 300 between three reels and it works out great! 75 yrds a little light but my own a opinion. I run the 80 and 100 on my reels. I can cast a weagle or one eyed willy quite far so 75yds is pushing it.....

Location: Contrarian Island | I do the same as others...I do 2 reels with 150 yard spool...200+ feet is plenty as a very long bomb cast is only 100 feet...I fill the spool to just under 3/4's and then put on the braid..most reels are about 24" per turn so that helps to make sure you have 150 or more feet on the reel...braid lasts a very long time... maybe every other season just rotate the braid on it

Posts: 582 | I fill the entire reel. Just wrap electrical tape around the spool and load it on. That causes it not to slip. I have never trusted tying braid to mono.

It's not the tying the braid to the mono that keeps it from slipping as much as the braid is able to "dig" into the mono which keeps it from slipping. Basically the same as it digging into the electrical tape you use.

I tie one end to a tree the end of my driveway and have a marker 75 yds from that. I know a few guys that do the same thing on local football fields. They tied the line to the field goal post and walk. It's nice since the lines are marked.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | I use a Berkley line filler that I have mounted a reel line counter on it ( very easy to do by yourself) so I can fill any reel and know to the feet how much line I installed on that reel. Here are some pics of the Berkley Line filler with a reel line counter I installed on it. Posts: 682 Location: Sycamore, IL | Thanks for the tips...I might have to pick up one of those for filling my reels...can you use it in reverse to take line off the reel as well? Does it provide tension to the line as you are spooling it on?

Posts: 2327 Location: Chisholm, MN | My fishing partner decided one day that he wanted to try my rod out after a long day of fishing. I said "go right ahead" He picked up the rod and just as he was about to cast I said "be careful". He launches a cast and snaps the line sending my krisco about 50 yards, along with about 40 yards of line. Thats a case where you want a lot of line. I still had enough on there to make it the rest of the season. Funny story I thought. Of course I didn't think it was that funny at the time.

My post wasn't intended to say you are doing it wrong or anything like that, just pointing out that the knot between the mono and the braid is not really that important. In fact you would not even need to tie a knot as long as you put the braid on tight so it digs into the mono, same with your tape method. When I say "dig" I don't mean that it actually digs in that you can see it digging in but that it kind of adheares to each other. Either way works equally well and if you like the tape then have at it.

Posts: 582 | reelman, sorry if my post came off the wrong way. Didn't intend it to believe me. I used to tie mono but got in the habit of taking about 6-7' off my line and retying my leader after a day on the water. By the time mid season came around, i was getting too close to mono. At that point i just started spooling all braid.
