Rigging the new boat, and I am looking to upgrade from a 24v to 36 v trolling motor.

Space is tight, and I don't think I can fit another big battery in.

Is there any harm in running different sized batteries in a system? say one group 24 and 2 group 30s? Or one 30 and a pair of 24s?

I'd really like to go with the 36V system, but if I can't make it fit then I guess I'll just stick with what I have.

Hiya,

Shouldn't be an issue...it just lowers your running time since the smaller battery does not have the same power capacity as the two group 30.

So, runtime would be limited by the smallest of the batteries, right?

Opinions needed...

Am I be better off sticking with the 24v 80 pounder and running bigger batteries (group 30)?

Or going with the 36v 101 and having to put in smaller group 24s?

Any ideas on how total runtime will be effected? I know it will be less, but...

I don't do much "remote" fishing so I basically only need one full day of run time on a charge. I recharge after each trip. I'm thinking three group 24s should be just fine for any situation I'll be in. I basically need to be able to get a solid long day out of these TM batteries...potentially in some strong winds...

With my 101 the battery box only held 2 batteries so the 3rd battery was installed under the dash on the passenger side and then a hole was drilled to get the cable to run in with the other batteries.

I have a Crestliner Mirage and the main battery box is located under the floor between the driver seat and the passenger seat. THis worked out great. I just had the 3rd battery put into a seperate battery box to cover it up.

I've looked at that too, but I'm not sure how excited I am about remotely locating one of the batteries just to squeeze another one in there.

I've got some looking to do

And, from what I can figure knowing the amp hour ratings of the batteries and the max draw of the motors I should get about the same runtime out of the 101 with 24s as I would get from the 80 with 29s in the batteries that I am looking at.

If the runtime is the same, what is the downsize of the smaller group size?

Don't know what boat you have, but one thing to consider with a 36V is how SLOW you can go. I know on Mellot's 620 with 101lb that it's hard to go slow on a calm night.

Personally I'd go with the 80lb with larger batteries if you're going to use the TM for "normal" duty. It's about $300-$400 cheaper to go that way to boot.
