Conditions very unpleasant, but not unfishable.

some adversity
dirty water
cooling water
and dropping water.

tmps now in upper 40's low 51's

Now it would have been nice to have at least one of those conditions improved but it was still pretty fishable, just where they were locating was the question. Talked to a couple of Nebraska guys down here that had gotten 2 fish in prior 2 days 33" and 35". is what I think they said, and said they got it on big stuff. I was using bigger baits also, due to water color and cover, felt like they needed to be called out and be able to find the bait, however this pm, none found it, or didn't get called out. Tough to run a trap in the brush but might have been able to whack through it with a db3 or something with a big lip and sharp dive angle. I am thinking with the water dropping at over 6" per day, the fish have pulled off the back of the flats and it is probably down far enough so that they are hanging on the brushline on the drop to the historic summer pool. That strategy didn't do me a #*^@ bit of good, but it shoulda. I did catch a little something, and will try to get pic up later.

Fished mainly coves and some upper lake channel stuff.

First clue, only saw 4 boats this pm, and NO guides, always a sign that the bite is off on Cave. Only saw one possible bass guy and NO crappie guys(another bad sign on Cave at this time of year).

If the water level gets stabilized a little, if it warms up a little, the color won't hurt. Warricks and Clay Lick were just about right on color, much murkier as you went up, but the murk won't matter if the other two conditions improve.

So here is my lousy catch. I had to not only run my boat through a log jam under power to get close enough to snatch it, I also broke my lure retriever(finally) attempting to make the grab. And I don't even like spinner baits.. .

The Berkley bait is losing paint and to add new hooks probably cost more than the bait is worth. Those Cave Run guys never lose anything worth finding. Those Green River guys, use premium crankbaits. I look forward to going through the trash after that place floods.

Oh, muskies, naw, never saw one!

Don't feel bad, I fished with a guy last year that was pocessed in retrieving a bobber off a stump in shallow water. 15-20 mins we killed while he did his thing. It turned out to be bath day for him and a styrofoam float, no jig found!

Well, don't know about that, but DougJ and I both agree it is always good luck to retrieve a free bobber when musky fishing.

Hey that's my spinnerbait!! lol I look forward to the day that i can be on Melton hill one day and the Cave the next.... Rough life aint it man. lol I was on a roll somewhat on the Cave from xmas until about 2weeks ago. I only lost 1 while fishing 2 days n a row. Havent been back n 2 weeks now goin on 3. Prob go this weekend because my fever is getting hot and I've got some new lures 2 try. Only reports im getting is that some lucky guys r grinding 1 out every couple days by trolling. Not a hot bite. However that could change at any moment as we all know. It got pounded pretty good this weekend and I'm not sure if anyone caught a fish. I did see that Green is back under summer pool. Thats a good thing. Headed down there the 7,8,9,10th. Gotta love the spring!!

What! No bobbers? Your about the best bobber man I know. Got a real good eye for those bobbers, must have been a tough day.

firstsixfeet,

The 1 oz. spinner bait show above is custom made by Roger Ownens. Roger uses Owner hooks that are free-swinging, and the head of the bait identifies it as likely one of his. I have a couple of dozen of these in different colors and blade combinations. They are frequently found on the bait racks at Crash's Landing on KY 801 South on your way to the boat ramps.

On Cave Run Lake, the bait shown will be very effective in late spring once the water reaches the mid-sixties, and throughout the season until the water cools in late fall.

You might consider throwing such baits on the Cave during your next trip.

What identified it as a Berkley to you?

He said the crankbait was a Berkley, not the spinnerbait.

Like I said, those Cave guys never lose anything worth finding. Maybe I can swap it to Manitou Dan next time we get up to fish. He likes those spinner baits. I"ll quote cjrich when I pitch it to him. Yeah, that "custom" thing ought to make it worth more for sure. No tellin what I can get for it...!

Then yes; it's a Roger Owens spinner bait.

The man makes excellent spinner and buzzbaits.

And it's Warix Run ...

Fished 4 days at the Cave last week. Caught 1 fish per day. Caught a Fattie 40" rest mid 30's. Beats Ice fishing in Minnesota, we still have 2 ft of ice..

I'm still lurking like a cave run muskie, not actively participating much (again , like a cave ski) I guess I get to fish about as much as a cave run muskie feeds. MD

Popped a lil' 31incher about 130 today. Had a pretty good fish, at least 40+ inch's take a swipe on my half azz figure 8.... Never seen it again. I left early so I could watch the final four. Might go back and see if it will eat tomorrow, not sure yet.

Heading down to the Cave next week, and was wondering what type of conditions we might have? Planning on getting there Wed and fish thru Sun, first time there, so don't know what to expect. Thanks

Well, when you see the toothless guy on the porch pickin the banjo, you've gone one turnoff too far. Just yell "Hey!" to RiverMusky, put the truck in reverse, and get your tail outa there as quick as possible.
