In my experience, the areas that hold fish consistently in the spring VERY SELDOMLY will ever be under 40 degrees for more than a day or two. The most productive spots, shallow, dark-bottom flats will warm up extremely fast with a limited amount of sunlight. This February I it took 2 days of bright sunshine (but only high 40's and low 50's air temps) for an area (as described above) to go from frozen to the lower 50's. Maybe you have been fishing deeper water?

no i mean the whole lake is 37-40 degrees ... just frustrated that i cant catch anything maybe they just are to lethargic to chase anything ...im sure using large chubs or dead bait would be more successful but just not any fun

I have caught more than one muskie in water below 40 degrees using crankbaits. DDD's on suspended fish work any time you have open water. I'm sure other baits do too, but that is my choice. Don't let cold temps keep you from trying, they still have to eat, just not as often.

There's a classic In-Fisherman segment where they targeted early spring pike (in flat, quickly warmed shallow bays) with jig/creatures. They landed on the presentation after giving up on spoons, bucktails, cranks and spinnerbaits.

Still, slow twitching a small suspendo jake is my first choice.

I'm in school at McGill in Montreal and my campus is located on the northwest shore of Lac St. Louis, and too my amazement, I was the only guy to bring a fishing rod... anyway, there's a weedy, reed surrounded bay that's only about 5-6 feet deep but has a dark bottom. The ice just went out on last sunday the 3rd and its been high skies. that day I hooked a pike using a plastic fluke presentation, didn't shore him. I have been going back every day cause everything I've read says fish the northern bays with spinners, jigs,etc... so far, 7 pike hooked, 3 landed (rusty from winter) mostly on mepps 4 and single colorado spinnerbaits, but my friend was fishing for his first time today and he had a fat 30'' on but lost him at shore. Canada has been a nice change from Chicago, we got pike on our quad!

Sun is the trigger. Those babies get warm and then they start hitting. I'm hoping to see some musky action in the next few weeks, should I size up for them?
