hey guys. im having trouble with my line (50# tuffline plus) twisting when i use bucktails. i have even tried using a bb swivel above my leader. no matter what i do my line keeps twisting severely and eventually snaps. thanks.

Mr. Pike, I'm wondering if there is something else at work here?

A swivel on your leader should take care of the problem unless the swivel is locked up for some reason. I suppose you tried a few different swivels to make sure you didn't have a bad one.

When does the line snap? On the cast? On a backlash?

How bad is it "twisted"? Does the line look frayed at all?

Sorry that I don't have an answer for you but I would look at other issues like a worn line guide. Seems like a weird problem.

Also, I wouldn't use Tuff Plus below 65#. Seems that the Tuf plus in lower pound (i.e. smaller diameter) tests tends to not tolerate shock very well so it breaks. Try to up your test strength in the plus or try regular TUF in 50# or higher. TUF XP is good line too. Just started using it in 65# and I like it.

Hope this helps,
Jono

Not sure what kind of leaders you use but if you make your own, use smapo snaps. They work great and I notice from spinning equiptment that the chrome ones work the best.

I don't know either, Mr. Pike.

I would try to up the test of the line and see if it makes a difference.

That line snap stuff is frustrating. I watched my bro snap his tuf plus three times in one afternoon. We changed line after that and the snaps went away.

What kind of reel are you using?

J.

Here is a couple of tips that might help.

1. If you make your own leaders, use only Sampo brand swivels. When making the leader leave the end of the swivel with the little pin free, attach the wire to the housing end of the swivel. You want the pin to face the line. Most store bought leaders have the swivel on backwards. It's the pin that rotates under the torque of the load. Thus if the line starts to twist, the torque will cause the pin to rotate and remove the twist from the line. They way most store bought leaders are made it's the torque of the wire in the leader that causes the swivel to rotate, but single strand wire won't twist and it's line twist that we want to remove.

2. If your line badly twists anyhow, try this trick, and it will work for mono, dacron, and the new superlines. Cut the leader off of your line and remove any other tackle that might be on the line so that you end up with just bare line. Put your motor in gear at a slow speed about 2 mph. Now handfeed enough line off the rod and into the water so that the water drags starts to strip the line off the reel. Continue at given speed until your down to the backing line on the reel, this might be 150 to 200 yards of line depending on your reel. Once all the line has run off the reel into the water stop the boat and reel the line back in. Viola! Line twist is gone!!

What happens is the drag from the water forces the line to spin in the water until the line straights out removing the twist.

Hope that these 2 tips help.
