I actually live in Fairmont and around that area is Stonewall Jackson, Stonecoal, and burnsville. They all are within 20 minutes of each other and all are actually nice lakes. I actually think I would hit Stonecoal or Burnsville in the summer. Stonewall Jackson in the summer is a mess with all the boaters. Heck shoot me a PM when you are back in the area and we'll go try a lake.

I fished the 3 lakes that WV listed in "05". Stonewall and Burnsville both have miles of flooded timber. Stonecoal was a Gin Botttle,,,,, Never snapped a pic ''''

RAZE, you got a reeeeeal purdy mouth....

Yeah, Stonewall is where I would go, however, don't overlook the many fine streams that the state stocks with muskie.

Check out:

Yes, Mikie, right behind the college, is the C&R section, it's the easiest to navigate, and has the most fisherman, but compared to other parts of the country..that's not very many. If it was me, I'd check out the Tygart by the Phillippi bridge, that is one very cool stretch of water.

dude, I got this V-8 Dodge if you need some help..... Gimme a shout when you get settled in. I can show you a few real cool littl locations I've been haunting recently near Parkersburg.

While we've got local folks looking at this thread, anyone up for a long weekend outing at Stonewall? I've only fished it - once -for bass - looks like some awesome waters and lot of folks in my MI chapter rave about the place. They have a world-class lodge and I'm guessing maybe cabins?

Punch and Judy once said they'd like to come down for an 'out East' outing, what do you all think? m

Mikie,
Been to stonewall 8000 times in my life...well maybe not that many but a lot. Great lake just not in the summer. And about the cabins and lodge well go check out some prices and get back to me. (i bet you change your mind). There is however a nice cheap hotel just north of the lake on I-77 in Sutton. Let's make some plans for maybe april??? let me know.

Also, the lodge at Tygart Lake State Park is nice, and cheap. But not convenient to Stonewall. THere are lots of little places to stay that have cabin rentals in the area. If it's Stonewall, I say shoot for spring. Also, we could chase a few river muskies around.

The good thing about the Stonewall area is that we have 3 nice lakes in the same area so we could fish a different lake each day. Yeah I'd like to shoot for April if it's okay with everybody else. Let's get a list of names started guys, let's see what we can do.

wow, you were right about pricey accomodations at Stonewall's resort. For $150/night, I guess we could get 10 guys to chip in 15 bucks and take turns.
What's the name of that cheap motel?

Also, there's some motels at the Interstate exit just above the lake, I'll try to look them up; me wife just joined AAA. Or, was is 2 A's? anyway. m

Mikie,
I think the exit just north of stonewall is Sutton. My dad and I stay there when we fish in the chapter 9 outing there. I think it's a comfort Inn. Pretty nice and if I recall pretty affordable and there are some good restaurants in that little plaza and plenty of parking for boats. So far we got four people
me

tom
jason (friend of mine)

anybody else...let's shoot for 10 guys.

I think we stayed in Weston, once; that's not too far, either if I recall. m

Guys, if you're going to fish Stonewall Jackson, stay at Weston. It's just north of the lake at the Rt. 33 exit. There is a Comfort Inn and a Super 8 along with a couple of restaurants nearby (east side of I-79). Also more amenities just west of I-79 into Weston.
There is another motel in West Weston but not quite as nice.

To fish Stonewall, the two primary launch ramps are Vandalia in the Skin Creek arm (~6 miles east of I-79) exit 96? To fish the West Fork arm put in at the marina at the main State Park entrance at Roanoke which is about 2 miles from I-79(exit 93 ? ) There is a small entrance fee to this ramp.

Vandalia ramp is 6 miles from the dam up the Skin Creek arm. Make sure you hit Little Skin and Wolf Fork areas, lots of flooded timber as you work down the lake towards the dam.

At Roanoke, you can put in and go upstream to fish flooded creek channls similar to those at Cave Run. Canoe Run and Sand Creek areas are noted. Going down towards the dam (~6 miles) you will find lots of small timbered coves. There are some no wake zones at and above the marina area, you have to proceed slowly most places anyways due to the timber.

Both of these access ramps are ~ 10 -15 minutes from Weston.

Stonewall can be tough but has some huge, girthy fish. We've stocked advanced fingerlings the last two years and hope to see the numbers pick up as time goes on. During the last two MI spring outings, large slowly worked jerkbaits have moved the most fish, don't overlook trolling mainlake timbered banks and cove mouths w/shad type baits even this early if you're not moving fish casting.

WRT the other lakes mentioned, Stonecoal holds some real trophies but is fairly deep, clear and full of trout. Makes for tough fishing (also 9.9hp rating). Burnsville is underrated and overlooked. Stocked just as well as Stonewall (except for the advanced fingerlings) it has turned out some really good fish recently. One of my DNR friends feels we are missing the boat by not fishing it more. It's not as pressured as SJL for muskie.

Jim,
How ya been? I'm disappointed I can't make it our chapter meeting on the 10th. Stupid work. Yeah I don't know why I was thinking Sutton, I knew it was Weston...boy I feel dumb..lol. Yeah I feel burnsville is a great lake, fished it many times. Thanks for the information Jim and maybe you should come over and fish. Thanks again.

SWJ:: April is good but March is better. April is usually scattered skinny 40 inch fish for me. March is easy to pinpoint hogs. (Before they raise the lake)

Hey all,
New to the forum. I live in Morgantown, WV presently, but my wife is from Canada (Ontario near Ottawa). Over the last two years, I have had the opportunity to fish for Muskie up there and have fallen in love with this toothy predator. I can't tell you how excited I am to hear that there are Muskies in my back yard.
I have an open bow ski boat (wife made me buy something that the kids could enjoy too ). Can anyone help me find the muskies on the Monongahela river? I usually put in at the star city boat launch. Thus far, I have had almost no success with anything--let alone muskies. I am in law school right now so I really don't have time to drive downstate to fish so I am pretty well limited to the Mon as far as fishing for muskies is concerned. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone in advance for your help!
