Subject: Tranx: Differences in PG and HG

I was drooling at the Tranx again this morning and I noticed a few differences between the PG and HG models.

What first caught my attention was the color of the handle on each reel (silver on the PG, black on the HG). Upon further inspection, I realized that the handles differ in more than just color. The handle on the PG is recessed towards the reel, while the handle on the HG is "recessed" away from the reel. I'm not sure what the correct terminology is, but it is plain to see in the pictures.

The other difference I noted was the color of the spool itself (silver on the PG, black on the HG). I expect this is merely to match the corresponding handle as the line capacity on each is the same.

Looks like they just flipped the handles around and put the knob on the opposite side.

The test samples I have are identical both in terms of handle shape and spool color! I'm not sure where those photos came from but I'm guessing they were pre protos and mocked up for photography. None of the field samples I've seen have any decals or writing on them either.

Larry,
Here are the links. The pictures come from Tackle Direct. You can preorder them through their website, so I assumed these were the most up-to-date pictures. I don't know for sure, of course.

Larry, in the clip you did with Jason where he was using your prototype I thought I saw on the left side of the reel it was marked Fast and Lo. I almost thought for a minute that they had made a reel that allowed you to switch gears. That appears not to be the case now that we've seen more on this reel, but what were the markings for, since they (fast and lo) would appear to indicate opposite gear ratios?

when shimano makes a prototype they get it out to their pro staff, those 2 same reels most likely got circulated around the pro staffer's. One pro gets it for 2 weeks, and then another gets it for another two weeks, and another, and another. They might have been more proto's around but not many and I doubt if any.

This video gives a look at the reel in the field. On the web page it's the 2nd video down "The Prototype Shimano Tranx":

They were marked fast and slow so we could tell em apart...Cosmetically they were identical.

The handle arm on the HG model actually looks a tad bit longer to me than the PG, thus giving you a bit more leverage? If it is actually longer.

If you were to take off some line on the faster model (HG), couldn't you acheive the same power and ease of resistance as the slower (PG) model? Maybe this would create power and speed that would split the difference between the fast model and the slow model? If this can be achived ther is no need for the slower model.

Also would taking off a 1/8'' to 1/4" of line change the casting performance?

I ask this because I want top speed but concerned I may not be very comfortable just slowing my hand (retrieve) speed down, when needed.
Just my thoughts, correct me if im wrong.

any input appreciated, thanxs

You, great persons, the difference is in the speed look at the photos, one says 4.6:1 and the other one says 6.0:1.
