Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> taking pictures

I usually fish alone in the boat so I was wondering how I should go about taking pictures of me holding fish without going through a lot of work to get the camera positioned, focussing, ... This takes too much time and I want to get the fish back asap. But I have caught several nice pike to 105cm when I was alone and I keep kicking myself in the head for not having taken a picture. Putting the fish on the bottom of the boat is NO option for me because this damages the slime layer on the fish. I could use some help so maybe someone out there used to have the same problem and found a solution for it? Right now, I'll try to put the camera on my tackle box and I'll see how that turns out but in windy conditions that may be a bit risky for the camera's sake.

I asked a similiar question, but started a post called, "Shopping for camera for the Boat".

I still have not gone out to get my camera and accessories. But a quality camera, preferably digital, with a self timer, and tripod.

I am also eager to hear how others have simplified their systme in taking the shots.

Seems like a lot of work to set up the tripod, get the camera on, garb the fish and take shots?

I'd like to hear more as well!

I know that there are some that have fastened velcro to the bottom of their camera and also to the top of their motor. It will take a little time and precision work to find out where to stand to take the picture, but when you do, mark that spot on your boat floor where all of your pictures will be taken.

When you have everything set-up get on the water and catch the most photogenic fish you can, put the camera on the velcro strip, set the timer, and say cheese.

It's much easier (not to mention a lot more fun) to take a "camerman" along. Tripods, velcro, etc. can assist you with taking pictures but they just plain aren't worth a da_n as a "netman!"

I fish alone most of the time, and what I do is set the cameras (video and still) on the tripod, then bungee cord it in place in the back of the boat BEFORE I start fishing. This way they are already set up and ready to go when I do catch a fish. One time I turned the video camera on and just let it record, and I got myself on video casting, catching and releasing a 35" musky. It is pretty cool.

Here's what I do...

1. Before heading out I make sure the camera and tripod are set up correctly (eg. position the tripod head and lock it down, adjust camera settings, load film, etc), and then I put everything away in one of my storage compartments.

2. When I catch a musky, as soon as the fish is in the Beckman net, I turn on my livewell (54" long) to start filling. Usually by the time that I've unhooked the fish in the net, the livewell has sufficient water in it for me to place the fish in it.

3. Next I quickly setup the tripod and camera again, which now only takes less than a minute to complete.

4. Finally, I pull the fish out of the livewell and take 2 or 3 quick shots before releasing the fish.

I have a foot controlled shutter release for my camera, so I can take shots very quickly without having to wait for a timer to go off, plus I can keep both hands on the fish the whole time.
