Had a bunch of time off and can't say I have put it to good use musky fishing.
Weather livable but the water conditions...ugh.

Choice today, Green River Lake 10 feet out of the banks, great place to go if you want to hit some floating timber and stir some mud. Not my choice of levels for water at current temps, but it might be alright 5 degrees warmer, naw, just kidding, it's not a good level for Green ever. Next choice Cave 8 ft out of the banks, actually livable but I would like it a little warmer and a little more settled. But Cave at 8 over is actually fishable, if you like hitting the tree line. Buckhorn, well Buckhorn is rarely my choice at this time of year, and 17 feet out of the banks, doesn't exactly add to its attractiveness. Last two choices., Dale Hollow and Melton Hill, and not a trolling fan, so...

Melton Hill is always dynamic and right now it is more riverine than reservoirine.
They are pouring water through that bugger so fast you can drift fish it. Unfortunately it is somewhat coolish water, great for the trout, not so exciting for prespawn muskies. Main lake body is clear with temps at or around 44-46. Bull Run is coming in with its own special chocolate milk color, but running 4-6 degrees warmer. I am suspicious some fish have made the muddy, warm water choice. I just couldn't do it though, and went down lake, lifting rocks and looking under deadfalls. Found three fish somewhat active, with one actually hitting and being caught, unfortunately it had only attained 66% of the 50" I'm sure it will grow to.
I did see one muskie laying under a tree trunk suspended, and after doing a double take, neatly ran it off by wrapping a cast around the trunk. It may actually have been something else but, I am suspicious that it was a small 26-48" muskie. I did verify that it wasn't sick. Nothing sick could have left that fast.

While fishing some of the lower coves I started to get into the warmer water, and fish. Seems to be a residual of 48-52 degree water once you get below the first big cove. It started to thunder when I was fishing. It started to rain. I hadn't planned on any rain. In fact, I only had my raincoat. I got pretty wet. Sometimes, when you get old, you start to forget stuff, just ask old Doug what's his name...

Well glad u atleast got out and about FSF. My buddy and i went 2 the Cave saturday for afew hours and i can relate to the dodging of floating trees... and other unidentified objects. lol They were actually holding the dam on saturday. It was creating the (greenwater) conditions in the backs of the creeks. I hate fishin that crap too.. Tried the muddy water with no luck. Cast some, trolled some. This was my first trip of the year that i didnt either see a musky or catch 1or2. I was actually more interesting in removing my buddies "older" lowrance lcx20c from his boat. As well as wiring up some of his stuff. I traded him 3 abu's for it! Sweet deal 4 me! We were seeing temps from 44.5-46.9. Looks like they opened up the dams on Green and the Cave 2day. Probably b suckin the bottom out of them by the weekend..

Luckily they will have plenty to suck, another 1-2" in the forecast for today, and lately that forecast has been about .5 of what actually gets us.

And for me, spring is always kind of a crapshoot down here. You never know what you're gonna roll. And going to Melton Hill, the only thing for sure about that is it usually is within 2 feet of full pool all the time but you never know what its full of.

You should see that place when they close the upper dam and keep drawing. They have all these muddy sloughs and Bull Run Creek flats, and pull them into the lake. Spring can be an ugly thing in the south.

Of course, its still better than the week in Warroad:

Today: Snow showers tapering to some flurries this afternoon. High 31F. Winds light and variable. Chance of snow 60%.

Tonight: Considerable cloudiness. Low 8F. Winds light and variable.

Tomorrow: Scattered flurries and snow showers. High 29F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 30%.

Tomorrow night: Considerable cloudiness. Low 19F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph.
Friday: Chance of a few snow showers. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low teens.

Saturday: A few snow showers. Highs in the mid teens and lows in the low single digits.

Sunday: More clouds than sun. Highs in the low 20s and lows in the upper teens

of course, we can't drive our pickups out on the lake...

LOL thats funny... I had one weekend that the mainlake ramps froze on the Cave. I went below the dam that day. I would eat a gun if we had hard water for 4-6months!!! I see that Green went up another 1.6feet overnight. Thats 19.2 over winter pool and 12.2 over summer. They still have the dam on hold though. The Cave came up another foot overnight and shes 15.7 over winter and 9.7 over summer pool. Holdin the dam there too.. I'm still gettin rain here in Lexington right now. Should make for an interesting weekend of fishing. Hope I dont hit any floating refrigerators!! lol

I was feeling depressed since we still have hard water in Wisconsin but to have open water and not really be able to fish it would be torture.

See?? Told you that your memory starts to go when you get older. Old Doug whats his name has forgotten what warm weather feels like, and what open water looks like. Sad story
