The muskie was caught and released. He kept it on a string until I could get up there with a camera for the picture. that muskie swam off with no problem.

Thanks for updating about releasing the muskie. I could see where there was going to be lots of muskie fishermen telling you about catch and release. Personally, I wouldn't blame anyone keeping a muskie as long as they follow the state regulations. Of course, I encourage others to release every muskie.

As to handling and releasing muskies, there are a lot of different opinions of how and what to do. And, even the best have difficulties some times. I even think some lures are harder on muskies than others. The only muskie that I lost was on a suick. It wrapped itself up around the leader. We worked with it over 20 minutes, but it floated belly up. I find it hard to fish a suick because of that experience....and that was many years ago. Now, that might cause some discussions.

Luckily, spring time means cooler water and most fish, including muskies, probably have a better rate of making it, even if they have been put on a rope stringer. Since the young man intented to release the muskie, I'm sure he was watching it to see if it was ok.

Anyway, congrats to the young man on catching the muskie. I'm sure he is still excited. And, since he released the muskie, I'm sure he will be spending more time chasing muskies............good times in the future.

And, thanks for letting everyone know the muskie was released and ok...

Troy,

As Bob mentioned above, thanks for letting us know that the muskie was released. As far as people giving you a hardtime for posting the picture with stringer, don't feel bad about it. I hope and believe that they're trying to educate you, your son, and Caleb (son's friend) as to how to handle muskies for the best chance of their survival.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with muskie fishing and much of the muskie fishing community, but almost all are strictly catch and release; always looking for what's best for the fish. While everybody should be glad to hear that the fish was released, some are likely mad at you for posting this. Don't worry about them - anyone that cares about muskies and other fishermen should be using this to educate someone they know (whether it be a new muskie fisher or someone who doesn't fish for muskies at all but catches them once in a while) about proper handling techniques. Maybe you can mention to Caleb that you guys should stay within yelling distance for when somebody catches one so the person with a camera can get their by the time the fish is landed.

I remember my first muskie by myself - I was fishing a gravel pit from shore, landed the fish and kept it laying on it's side as I ran to my car to get my camera and get a picture of it...it released fine, but was it the right thing to do? Not at all. But this was before I became familiar with the proper handling techniques of muskies and have learned a tremendous amount since then.

Again, congrats to Caleb on a very nice fish. I hope you, your son and he are able to learn more about handling muskies from this and take it as a positive experience. Hope to see many more pictures of big fish from you!
