Posts: 162 Location: Bemidji, MN | What James says... mudhole is great. Don't be afraid to look at some models that aren't specifically labeled as musky rods. Just look at the length and action you are after. They also arry some of the coolest looking grips and reelseats I have seen anywhere.

Posts: 909 Location: South-Central VA | Can you define what reasonable means to you? What weight lures are you looking to throw? To get a good musky blank you're probably going to need to spend over $100 for a blank of that length. The top musky blanks are not cheap. Mudhole's selection is as good as anyone's. They have the St. Croix's and Lamiglass as well as a few others that will work as musky blanks. The only two 9' musky blanks they carry are the Lami and the Big Nasty. I'm currently building the Avid Inshore 8' in heavy power for a light musky rod. They have a Mudhole Custom builder blank that is 7' that you could extend to 8'. It's rated to 3oz and it's only around $27 or so. I've extended several of my personal rods to get the length I wanted. Extensions aren't hard to do but they must be done by someone that knows their stuff. Like J Nail said, they have some sweet reel seats and such. Just make sure that they are large enough to fit the blank you choose. Most of them will not fit a musky sized blank. There are alot of options out there. Give us more specifics on what you're looking to do with the rod and you can get better recommendations. jeremy

Posts: 76 Location: Bartlett IL | Gary Wicks in Anoka, MN sells blanks. The Competitor Series Blanks comes in an 8'6" extra heavy. http://www.garyscustomrodnreel.com/catalog.htm#compblank

Posts: 303 Location: WI | MH471 - I have a couple of the 8'6" models and have also built a few others (for friends) using that blank. It would be comparable to a SCII for weight and feel. It will throw ALMOST anything in your musky lure arsenal. The blank is forgiving when fighting and landing fish.

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | I have the 7'6" and 8'6" from Gary. I built them a couple years ago with North Metro Muskies Inc.. They are fantastic blanks. They would both benefit from a 6" butt extension, but are otherwise really nice rods for the money. I throw pounders with my 8'6". I think it handles them just fine. It's also my cowgirl rod for now, and is pretty nice for that duty.
