Pardon my ignorance, but could somebody tell me what is meant by the term "Show Color." Are these color patterns designed only for the shows? And not expected to be used on the water? Who buys them? What for?

And not expected to be used on the water? Who buys them? What for? Yes, a show color is designed specifically for the shows and generally aren't available after that. There are some exceptions to that tho. They are definitely meant to be used. As far as who buys them, anyone who wants them. And what for? Fishing muskies, although I know some people buy them for ornamentation in their offices, etc., but yes, they are made to be fished.

It may be just another way to sell lures but you may also find a lure in a color is just right for a body of water you fish. In 09, went to a show and my son picked up a shallow invader in a show color that matched the color of another lure he had success with on our lake, a very dark stained body of water. The first time he used it, on opening day, had a follow by a big fish, a follow by a smaller fish and boated a 40", all in the first hour. So, it may also be a way to get lure in a particular color/pattern that works where you fish.

Posts: 210 | A "Show Color" is one you show your buddy. He likes it for whatever reason. Then you show him how much you like him by throwing him the second of that color you got. Or you show him just how much of a #$@%^ you are by telling him he should be able to find that color, "No problem!"

Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | A show color is a very special color pattern, not available to the general public through normal outlets. It is specifically designed to entice people, who should know better, to add another lure they don't really need to their arsenal. I should know, I've got lots of them!

Show colors are gimmicks to get you to buy a bait. I can almost here the conversation of most bait manufacturers that offer "show colors" "Hey do you think this color will work?" "I don't know, but it's pretty and will probably sell at a show" "You're right, let's make 50 of them and tell everyone it's a special show color" Now do show colors catch fish, absolutely, but I still think there's more gimmick to it than anything. They are fun to look at though. John

Posts: 8792 | Well, to me it's pretty cool having a color of a particular lure that wasnt mass produced. Whether there were 50 or 100 or only 10 made doesn't really matter to me. Should they be fished? Certainly. Unless you are a collector, (I am not) a musky lure is pretty well worthless if you don't actually use it for that which it was designed for. Do they catch any more fish than the mass produced colors? Probably not. Do they catch fishermen? Hehehe... That's what lures are designed for. If they didn't, we'd all have 20 or 30 lures and that would be it.

Posts: 633 | Another reason for companies to do show colors is, that they can sell them at the show, and have their standard colors be sold by their dealers. If a manufacturer is at a show, and they are selling the same colors, or offering a deal (buy so many for so much we will give you this free) they are competing against their own dealer that they have to rely on for the rest of the year. Now if they only sell special non-standard colors, and their standard colors are at a dealer, they are not competing with each other. This way the manufacturer can recoup some of their money without competing against their dealers.
