Posts: 615 Location: Madison, WI | Just getting an idea how many think it's necessary to wear a respirator or lung protection when clearing their baits (use D2T and E-Tex)? I haven't in the past but i plan to in the future. I'm not sure how bad the fumes are but the smell does get heavy if you are clearing a bunch of baits, i usually do about 6 at a time max. Thanks in advance for your input, MS

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Always...........after applying gallons of it over many years I got to where I get headaches everytime I use it. The stuff is nasty and I always wear a good respirator with ventilation when using it now. Jed

Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | When painting commercially I used to E-tex the Magic Makers by the 100's ( wheel would hold 75 ) Shop was properly vented and we had no problem with it. Never used the D2T though. I use a Pasche air brush booth and it vents a lot of air so I don't wear a mask when painting the lacquer or two part clear. I don't have any fume problems until the baits are all hanging for drying and I am finished with them then the clear has a slight odor to it but am out of the shop then for the day. Before this booth, I always wore a double filtered mask for painting.

| Hey Stan, Is the Pasche booth the big floor standing one, I've been thinking about getting one and wondered how the work. Wanted to make sure before spending a grand on a booth. Thanks | |||

Posts: 351 | I wear a respirator when carving and painting and I just bought another to use in my finishing room. Its' funny, when I first started carving and shaping baits on the belt sander, the dust never bothered me. Now, it jams my sinuses completely shut at the slightest whiff of wood dust.

Posts: 615 Location: Madison, WI | Vince, Same with me, never bothered me before. It has to do with the immune system and certain hypersensitivities that take place. The first few times you are exposed to cedar dust for example, the body doesn't have any pre-formed antibodies or other immune complexes, and so no reaction. After continued exposure the body reacts to the fumes/dust the same way it would an allergen or invading pathogen and a cascade of immune reactions take place (histamine release etc.), similar to those with allergies. They used to call it "farmers lung", farmers would get large exposures to allergens/mold spores when doing hay and over time get serious lung damage due to the repeated immune system recruitment. Take home message I guess is wear your respirator, it can't hurt and not wearing it could harm! Sorry a lot more info than anybody needed, i just find the topic interesting MS Edited by muskyslayer96 12/20/2010 9:52 AM

Posts: 1530 | we normally do not use a respirater for etex. our other paints are sprayed and solvent based. in that case we run a ventilation system. sealing, primer or base colors require ventilation and protection. with blowers running you can see your heat heading out with the fumes. play safe. on the wood end we run a 5hp dust collecter and even with that dust creeps.

Posts: 9 | I paint up some old lures with spray paint over winter and wear a gas mask I got at Home Depot. Works well and I no longer blow colored snot! That cannot be good for you.
