Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Why do you want to weigh them? Get good measurements and you will get close enough.

Posts: 64 | Its for pike here in Colorado, rather not kill one of it isn't a state record, However the state record pike here is one caught on powerbait, be nice to get that one out of the books! There is a safe way to weigh them and I know weighing fish isn't popular, but I am curious to know what people use to weigh fish properly.

Not understanding why you want that one out of the books? Was it caught by Louie? Or do you mean "off" the books? Why is powerbait illegal there?

Posts: 572 | Although I'm not from Colorado, I believe someone is merely wanting to have the state record for northern pike to be caught on a lure rather than powerbait, which it was caught on. I think the following is referencing how the state record was caught. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2006/Aug/15/bdentryb-thornton... I agree, it would be nice to see a state record caught on a lure rather than powerbait. Besides the northern came from trout water, which usually is fairly cool. I feel most northern pike could easily be weighed and released. If I ever make it back to Colorado, I hope to try some of the northern pike fishing. It sounds like fun. Good luck.

| I ran into a few around 20lbs this past June on the fly rod, but did not see anything close to the record. It is super fun sight fishing/wading in the mountains though. Great fishery no doubt. BR | |||

Location: Contrarian Island | i've weighed a couple...we had them in the net, took off the handle portion of the frabill, attached scale to netting up by hoop and lifted the hoop w/ fish it...fully supported, no harm to fish....released fish, then weighed the wet hoop portion and subtracted...gets you very close if you have an accurate scale....

Posts: 64 | Thanks for the tips everyone, just looking for some educated ideas, of course some other stuff has to go along with them as well. I am just trying to see what people suggest for the fishes health. ( still plan on releasing everything) just more curious than anything. The powerbait thing is just an irritant, not a legit reason to keep a fish. Thanks for the relevent ideas, the other stuff is comical....

Posts: 225 Location: Nordeast Minneapolis | The plan I came up with (but have yet to implement) is to get a good bathroom scale to keep in the boat. Stand on scale while holding fish (or fish in net), remember #, let fish go, stand back on scale w/o fish, remember #, do math. Seems like the quickest and easiest way to get a relatively accurate measurement, without having to screw around too much.
